Links misdirected

I posted this on the Non tech forum, but I guess it really belongs here.

I can't get on to the classifieds at all, or some other pages from certain links, because the links are directing me to "naxja.org" instead of inlandhosting. Is this a problem with the links, or is there something about my computer that is not getting the redirection right? It seems to work all right on my laptop with Windows XP, but not my desktop with Win98. It is not browser dependent, and happens with either firefox or IE6, and I deleted all my cookies, cache, and hosts.

Can you point out exactly which page you are getting the error on? Which forum skin too.

Not sure if it is a typo in your post, but the links *should* be directing you to naxja.org

I am inclined to think it is on your end, since you point out that it works normally on one machine, but not on another. Have you tried flushing your DNS cache?

BTW, as a heads up... in the near future you may be inconvinienced again while we move to newer and better hardware.

First, this is Win 98, so there is no DNS cache to flush.

All working links on this computer send me to www.inlandhosting.net. If I hover the mouse over them, I get an inlandhosting.net URL. If I hover the mouse over the links that do not work, I get a naxja.org URL. The unsuccessful links include all those in the second line of the navigation bar of any forum page, from "home" to "classifieds." They lead to 404 errors or archive pages, or other error pages. In addition, on the main forum page which lists all the forums, all links work except for the subhead links in "street and performance." However, I can go to "street and performance," and when on that page, go to the sub-forums without a problem.

I cannot get the classifieds through any means including the forum jump window.

As an example, the page I'm on right now shows in the URL window as this:

http://www.inlandhosting.net/~naxjaor/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=750191

The problem shows up with any skin and either Firefox or IE6. It shows up whether or not I have server assigned DNS servers set in my TCP/IP settings. I do not have any naxja-oriented entries in my hosts file either.

Now the strange thing is that on the same network, I can plug in my XP laptop, and all links lead to naxja.org, and all work.

This has me really baffled. All I can think of is that it's a Win98 issue.

I'm not really looking for an excuse to buy a new computer. :bs:

Wow, you have a seriously confused system.... Those temp URL's seem to be stuck in your system for some reason.

Been a long while since I have serviced anything running Win98, so not sure how much help I can be.... but it is on that end, not this end. Wish I could help from here.

Never mind. I found the problem. I had trouble last year with DNS lookups owing to a problem with my ISP, and I put a few of the most common ones into my hosts file to bypass the lookup. That's the first place I looked, but the default file reader on my system is a DOS text reader that didn't see the entry for NAXJA! I don't know why, but it alone was invisible in that reader. I opened it again in metapad, and there it was. I just took it out. And of course that was the problem.

I feel kind of silly, but there it is. Thanks for your patience.

Now I can put my old Jeep up for sale!
