Leaf Spring Clamps, homebrew?

1/2 is a little more than needed... try 1/4 from the top. the reason why you want it closer to the top is so that the leafs fit under the bolt. if you drill to far down the leafs will be in the way of the bolt hole.

It would be able to work but not as strong as steel. I think over time it would snap at the bends or it may snap right when you try to bend it.

Aluminum plate would work, just make sure your bends are perpendicular to the grain of the aluminum or it will crack as mentioned.
