Just got the Coleman rack today...

I have a Yakima Megawarrior. It looks as if the Coleman rack mounts in a similiar way. I like the yakima but one problem I've had is with the rack shifting from side to side on the trail. Granted this is loaded with a 33" tire, Hi-lift and a crapload of camping gear, but it's something to think about.
When I saw how it was mounted, I thought specifically of you.

Scary stuff seeing that rack shift around like it did.

Looks like a decent rack, but it needs something else to make it while wheeling. What that something is, I dont know, but it needs it.

The rack looks cool. Do ya get much wind noise?
It's only been on for a day and a half. So far no noise but it's been pouring for 2 days. Next fillup i'll see what my MPG says about the new addition.

As far as it being sturdy. I can rock it back and forth and it doesn't move. The jeep moves but the rack stays put. Pretty confident in that.

Sorry about the :scottm:s It's too bad, this board usta be civilized.
I was wondering how much it weighs? I'm thinking of adding one to my Subaru. I already have a big rack for the jeep.

I actually bent the yakima crossbars and had to replace with some steel tubing so it could take the weight of only a 31". It bent at pismo while I was going a little fast which also caused the D30 to bend as well. I now connect with u bolts with the cross bars attaching above the rack, thus lowering it which is nice. The yakima mounts suck and shift side to side, with u-bolts I have had no problems with this.

I am looking for another set of yakima 1A towers cheap so I can run a third cross bar. I am also going to add a couple more u-bolts to ensure it will remain stable. My advice for those mounting the coleman rack is to get a couple extra stock cross bars from a junk yard to add as additional support under the basket.

JeepinMass - thanks for the pics. Would you think the clamps would work on a thicker crosstube like the Thule bars? Eyeball guesstimate puts those at 1.25" wide x 1" tall. Otherwise, I'm sure a jerry-rigged clamp setup could be built.

I'll go out and measure the clamping system for you later today.

I have one , too , and I can say the same thing. I can grab mine and rock the shit outta the XJ , but the rack stays put. I wish it was longer , but I'm happy for the price . :)

Edit: Only pic I have that shows it .

Time to resurrect this thread! My sister bought me the Coleman rack for Xmas... and I mounted it the next day, looks good, seems sturdy. I wanted it specificaly for putting my spare up top. So I got a Yakima spare tire carrier (normally $80 + S/H) for $55 shipped from a guy on eBay...new!

Mounted the yakima on today, it was not a perfect fit, (plus it was like 20* outside whiel I was doing it)...but it fit fine. moved the tire up there and it looks good.

Wife is making me a custom tire cover from black marine vinyl. I'll try to get pics this week. it's just cold out there! Had to do the install in stages of coming back in to warm up the hands from holding cold metal!

Anyway, I'm gonna enjoy the new room in the back end of the Beast. Once the weather warms up (March in Michigan), I've got lights to mount up top as well, just trying to find good connectors to make a disconnect system if I need to remove the rack for some reason.

Use a flat 4 trailer harness. When you want to remove it, just unplug the harness.

Right there with ya BEAST, I got it just the other week. and its just as I expected. I wont be carrying any tires in it (I have a bumper/ Carrier on the way)... so for what I'll need it will be perfect. Its more of a Basket, which is all I want.

I hear some comments on the mounting system. I have a OEM Canoe rack that is much much better than the rubber spring rails that come stock. So its mounted solid on my rack. I actually like that it could be easily removed without spending a half hour with a bunch of tools and an assistant. I will need to take it off when I take the Canoe out. Here is a pic of the Mounting set up and overall...

Looks pretty decent....has anyone found a basket/cargo net for it yet?

Edit: nevermind...answered my own question.

i think i am about to go out and get me one of these right away!

i am wondering though couldnt you just add some more stock crossbars, from the PnP aka. junkyard, under the basket to help with load dispursion?

and if i'm not mistaken i am sure you could put about 100- 150 up there without any troubles, as long as the rack is mounted securely.

Well, I just ordered mine....had a guy at work that was gonna sell his Yakima, but his wife wouldn't let him....sooooo...I just decided to get this one. If you're not a Costco member, they charged a $3.75 non-member surcharge.....so the total came to $78.74 with standard shipping.

^x2. I was wondering how it got put together and if I could ge two of them and make 1 big one :)

I extended mine by using 3/4" EMT conduit. Some "nay-say'ers" are going to get on here and bash that idea but I have had ZERO problems out of mine and it looks great. It's stronger than you think...it will satisfy the needs that I have for it...I don't plan on hauling a car or an African Elephant on my roof rack like some people on here act like they do. I do have the hi-lift mounted to the rack using the "hi-lift" brand mounts. You can grab ahold of the rack and shake the Jeep with it so it' plenty sturdy.

I don't have lights mounted on the rack but I went to a pull a part junkyard and got an extra OEM cross bar and mounted the lights to it right in front of the rack. I did this so they would not stick up about the plane of the rack.

I meant to post some pics a couple of weeks ago but I forgot...:shhh: ...I'll try and get some tomorrow so you guys can see what it looks like.
