Just got the Coleman rack today...

I'm thinking of getting 2 of them. Then cut the back off 1 and the front off the other and put them together to make the desired leghth. And add a couple more factory crossbars from the parts yard, and viola!!

Do you think this would be strong enough to support a 31" tire? I would be going on my trail rig which doesn't see any highway driving.

a 33 will fit up there.

But would the rack be strong enough to hold it safely? Thats the concern, not the amount of room you have in the basket.

Yeah, you guys are underestimating the strength of this thing. I have thrown ALOT of weight up there and had no issues. A 33" tire will be fine.

I still want to see what it looks like with the extension on an XJ before I pick one up for my 32" spare.

For the price I would try and buy 2 since it would be cheaper than the extension. Then cut and weld together or if you don't have a welder find some pipe or tube that will fit inside the rack tubing slide it through with adequate length in each half and bolt or screw it together. The extension just screws on I believe with pretty much the same concept just it has neck downs built in to slide together.

If you are worried about space here are the dimensions.
44" x 39" x 6.5" basket

Im not worried about the tire fitting, I just think it looked kinda funny with a short rack on a vehicle with that much roof space. Was curious if it improved the looks with the extension on.

Extension, From what I have heard this is the same rack extension for the coleman. I will be ordering one sometime this week.

If that extender works for the Colman.

Yeah it does, if you look up the part numbers it crosses over.

Has this been confirmed or busted yet? I'm considering this as an option, but the rack alone is a little small and want to make sure that this extension will work.

Use a flat 4 trailer harness. When you want to remove it, just unplug the harness.

Not a bad idea.... i hadn't thought of that. maybe even use a 7pin round connector and have all the wires in one connector... get a receptacle that could mount flush in the roof and plug the jack in to it.

ideas ideas ideas.

Now i am looking at the extension everyone us talking about. My yakima tire carrier hols the 30" tire, but there is not a lot of room left in front. Granted I mainly only wanted it for the purpose of holding the tire, but if the extension give me room to the front, then it'd be even better.

I already have two extra crossbars between the two holding the rack, one goes right under where the tire carrier is connected to the rack.

soon as I got no snow (covering rack/roof/tire) I'll get pics up.

Right there with ya BEAST, I got it just the other week. and its just as I expected. I wont be carrying any tires in it (I have a bumper/ Carrier on the way)... so for what I'll need it will be perfect. Its more of a Basket, which is all I want.

I hear some comments on the mounting system. I have a OEM Canoe rack that is much much better than the rubber spring rails that come stock. So its mounted solid on my rack. I actually like that it could be easily removed without spending a half hour with a bunch of tools and an assistant. I will need to take it off when I take the Canoe out. Here is a pic of the Mounting set up and overall...

Nice... now I got no excuse for not taking picture with it covered in snow. :twak:

Seriously thoug, how good is the grip on those square crossmembers? Mine is a 2001, so I have the oval shaped bars and seems to provide a lot of surface contact with the shape of the clamps.
