Mark, you should give your dad the 98 and find a good fixer-upper like I did.

Thought about it.
we will see what unfolds.
With the DW figured out, it has a price tag on it now to "fixed" and that makes me even closer to unloading it for a reasonable price and starting the "replace the Subaru" fund.

Don't get me wrong, if my dad needs it, Its his, but I'll let him run his into the ground all the way before I volunteer.

There are other things pushing me toward unloading, so we will see what comes down the line.

Andy you run Bilstein 7100s right? How do you like them? Worth the price tag?

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Anyone know what the deal is with pulling certain parts off of cash for clunkers engines? I went to a junkyard last week and they had several CFC jeeps (99+)...I asked about taking the intake manifolds off and they said that was illegal. I went back today and the intake manifolds were gone off of them....

I have 12" travel 5150's in the front, 14" travel 7100's in the rear. I love them, but there is NOTHING factory about how the shocks are mounted in the rear. Look for my "Project Geriatric Dinosaur" thread, there is pics and info for how the 7100's are mounted. It was worth the price tag for me, I picked them up used off of craigslist in Los Angeles (actually got Qty 6 14" travel 7100's) and had a friend ship them to me. Long story, but i paid less *each* than a brand new Rancho 5000 costs.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Nice Andy, I'll look that up. Why didn't you run 7100's in the front? I was thinking of doing the exact opposite, 7100s up front 5150s in the rear. Rancho's? Gross! haha. I love the way my 00 rides stock, and want it to ride as nice (although of course it will be DIFFERENT) when it is lifted.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

if its in the yard its fair game

That's what I woulda thought too, but on all the CFC vehicles in this yard, they spraypaint all the stuff that can't be taken off orange. The guy said you can take small accessories like alternators and throttle bodies, but intake manifolds are a no-go. Doesn't make sense to me...At other junkyards, the intakes weren't spraypainted so maybe it's just this one...just kinda pissed me off that they told me I couldnt take them and I came back a week later and they were all gone.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

LAME. Wow that's lame. I can see why they would be scared to sell them, but if you walk up there with it are they really going to tell you to put it back? why not take a hammer to them then, they break pretty easy. They prolly pulled them themselves for the aluminum scrap. I got like ~$10-$15 for my 94 intake at the aluminum recycler.

Because its easy to make the front of an XJ flex (controllably), its much harder to make the rear of an XJ flex to match the front (with leaf springs in the rear). Both the 5150's and 7100's I run are valved the same (255/70).

I also wanted the rears rebuildable/tuneable (with N2 pressure), since I wasn't sure how well they would work at their factory setting.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

so what would your recommendation be then? Would you run 7100's up front if you had to do it again? I ran 255/70 5150's in the front of my 94 and it was very nice and controlled but rather stiff IMHO.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Anyone have an experience with the guys at Jeff Daniel's or The Jeep Shop? I have met the owner of Jeff Daniel's and he is really cool. Seems like a pretty laid back, high end shop. I have never done anything more than drive by the Jeep Shop. Reason I ask is I may be looking for a semi short-term (1-3 years) job in October, and have really been thinking about what I would like to do with myself. I would expect neither of these places to be hiring, but as a shop hand for starters who knows, maybe they could use someone a few days a week. I'm not looking for $20+/hr or whatever they would pay a certified mechanic. Doesn't take much to beat my current wages....

The guys at the Jeep Shop seem pretty cool, they're a family business though so I doubt they'd be hiring. They moved into the shop where I used to work (a body shop). I'm not sure about Jeff Daniels though.

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Yeah i saw online they are a family business. It's just the 2 guys running the place?

it would be ideal.

Likely the stiffness was the coil springs you were running. I like the Rock Krawler 6" and 8" springs (I forget who Rock Krawler gets them from now, but it shouldn't be hard to find out). They seem to be nice and flexy, and with a good shock (basically ANY Bilstein 5125/5150/7100 valved at 255/70 or equiv.) should flex/work well.

I like the 5125's/5150's in the front, I think the 7100's are overkill (unless you run JeepSpeed or like to drive fast down the trails) for the front of an XJ. UNLESS you find a smokin deal for a used set....

I have RE 4.5" front springs. do you consider them stiff?

or
I also have 3" Rough Country springs ... are they stiffer than 3.5" RE springs?
