hey guys, new member here but I have been hanging around for a couple of months, got myself a 89 4x4 6cyl and im going to be adding a lift and some 32's. I got the Dreaded dana35 in back and i was wondering if anyone knew of any good yards with newer vehicles or semi where i could pick myself up a newer 8.25 or a ford 8.8. Thanks a bunch i live in the LBC aka LONG BEACH!

I was at a local yard the other day that I knew had some 44s in the past and low & behold they had crushed afew XJs including the ones with the 44s.

Just look at the differential, here is a primer on diffs:

Chrysler 8.25

Note: Look for that flat lip at the bottom of the differential, that is a sure fire way to spot an 8.25. Earlier 8.25's had 27 spline shafts, later ones had 29. I think the cutoff year was mid 1996 model year, so if you get a 1997+ you're pretty guarenteed.

Keep your eyes open, I will come up with 44's every now and again as well, I will always shout out on NAXJA if I do.

If you're free check out the thread on the top of the forum about the Big Bear event, it's a guarenteed good time.

Well.... I'm on dayshift so no weekends off I took 2 days off for T.D.S. & the person who covers when I take a day off is working alot already so I doubt I'll be on the hill. Theres a slim chance I'd be able to make it up on Fri. for the day but its still too early to say yes.

thanks guys is the dana 44 just a bolt in or is there welding and such involved?

the d44 may bolt in, but will the driveshaft rotate freely?
the 44 housing is 2 inches longer than the 35. depending on how much lift your goin with will affect you angles. if you want correct driveline angle to the pinion you will have to cut the spring plates off, twist the axel up and reweld them with the correct angle. also drum brakes suck. go with the 8.8, its stronger and has disk brakes. and you would have had to weld anyways. and you can find one real cheap. if you are running a 2.5 inch lift or less a d44 may bolt in,and work, but im not sure.

well - 8.8 has its downfalls too:

  • narrower track width
  • c-clips
  • pinion flange
  • tin foil diff cover
so - its not the end all best axle out there.... just know that...
