i have pretty much come to the end of what i can do and fix on my 97 and still have no idea why it runs like hog shit. are there any shops in the portland area that specialize in jeeps and 4 litres?

i'de prefere not to spend over 1k on the jeep i paid 1k for. i am sure my locale jeep dealer could fix it but ide pay an arm and a leg for it

thats understandable. have you searched and posted up your issue in the local forum to see if anyone near you can come help troubleshoot or try and do an internet diagnosis?

Jeepers in Lake Oswego is honest and will do whatever they can to make it cheap. I think you're better off w/o a mechanic though. So much cheaper...

I'll give you $1000 for it, then you won't have to worry about it.

I have time.. Want a hand?

What are the symptoms, and what have you done in the process of elimination so far?

ok its a 1997 4.0 AW4.

symptoms -

will not start now unless the MAP is unplugged and when it does start it runs very rich as if its dumping fuel into the cylenders and needs to be held at half throttle, will not idle by itself without being held open or it will die. when it is running the tach jumps around as if it were on meth

checked fuel presure (good)
replaced CPS
replaced pick up coil (cam sensor)

ide like to find someone with a 97+ that we could just swap some parts back and forth to see if those are the issues instead of trial and error of buying new parts that may not fix it

With the MAP unplugged, it's going to run very rough, Have you checked fuel pressure yet? You're symptoms are similar to when my fuel pump went out the 1st time (i'm on #3)

I would suggest Rob's Offroad in Clackamas. Dave, one of their mechanics, is an amazing jeep guru. He's owned several jeeps and currenly drives an XJ.

I would also say distributor for the tach issue. But your fuel issue would have to be the map sensor or o2 sensor. MAYBE a stuck open fuel injector. After you replace any sensor unhook the positive cable from the battery and ground it to the negative post for 30 seconds to reset the ecu. Also when starting. If you hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor the computer won't open any injectors until started. If your running rich it could be flooding itself out.
