Jeep Recall

I would like to know how fast those things are moving at the point of impact. Most of the stories I've read were Grands being hit at highway speeds by bigger, heavier trucks while sitting still. I can't imagime any vehicle doing well in that kind of impact.

Yeah, I think the point is not to say that Grands do any better or worse in a catastrophic accident (50-70 mph into a stationary jeep - ouch!) as far as crumple zones, etc than other makes...

Rather, investigators are saying that Jeeps are much more susceptible to lighting on fire explosively/dangerously due to their gas tanks being placed in between the axle and the bumper than a truck with their tank in a different area (4runner, landcruiser, explorer, etc..) I can certainly see their point of a fire being MORE possible.

Still, as a few have said, the statistical chance of such an accident happening is already low, and the incident of fire, is even lower. Not sure I'm convinced the concern is warranted. As a consumer with family, though, I'm glad there's motivation for such investigations. I think it's good for car manufacturers to know that their designs can and will be investigated from time to time.

I feel like this happens every year, only with a different vehicle. Remember the crown vic hooplah from a couple years ago? Why is it just Jeep's now? How many other zillions of vehicles (trucks and SUV's especially) on the road all have the fuel tanks in virtually the same location?

I was working at a ford dealership at the time of that recall, the fix was to grind off a tab on the sway bar bushing bracket. If that tab actually made it to the fuel tank, it would be a safe bet that you have other things to worry about.

The lawsuit that caused that recall was from a accident local to me. A cruiser was stopped on the highway, and got rear ended by a vehicle doing 100+ mph. show me a vehicle that dosent suck in that kind of colision

Camera view 1 looks like me in my 1993 Grand Cherokee stopped at a light and hit from behind by an old lady and grand kids at 45 mph in a Nissan Sentra in 2003....2 blown lower back discs later and a crappy settlement....... oh joy.....

Reminds of the Old Ford Pinto Recall back in the day, I learned to drive in a Pinto! my dad had 3 of the gawd foresaken things back in the 1970's...... I still remember the bumper sticker he put on...
" Keep Your Distance,Pinto's Blow Up!"

Gonna be alot of happy techs at the dealer, I made a good living at Chrysler with Recalls, they had a Heater Core recall on the Renualt Alliance back in the day, half the damn things didnt run and came in the tow truck..... Chrysler paid the customer I think $200 if they came for the recall and a free tow if it didnt run.... It got to the point I would toss the heater core on the front seat and got paid my 3.6 hours, I was busy for nearly 3 months...... Also shift interlock cables on Jeeps and Durango/Dakota ball joint recalls.......

I honestly think Chrysler Corp had more recalls then any other manufacture ;)

I remember that Alliance/Encore recall. You must be old like me.

You know it's gonna be a bad day when you're at the drive-thru and there's a Pinto in front of you and an Audi 5000 behind you.

We had an Audi 5000 when I was a kid. It didn't really run long enough to get us to the drive-thru lol.

I dont remember that one, we did not have to many MJ's come threw the shop back in the day, we did have an MJ 4.0 2x4 atx that was used for parts express, and I was the one whom kept it going for many many years, I remember doing warranty work on all the late 80's AMC products when Chrysler acqured Jeep/AMC/Ren....... Worst AMC/Ren I hated was the Medallion! :party:

Medallion sucked. How about shifting issues on the Premier along with carboned up valves and weak CPSs?

Obviously you never put a started in an R5. LOL.
 
Did you ever get work on the 76 Chrysler-Dodge lean burn (Cordoba-Charger)? 400 4-barrel, heat monster? Made Renix cooling look simple:eek:, LOL.

I burned up the transmission, and had TC front seal leaks 7 times in 4 years on mine. Last time I EVER bought a new experiment!!!!
 
I started work at the AMC/Jeep/Renault/VW dealership in 1980.
We bought the local Chrysler dealership in 1987 so I didn't have to work with that stuff. Renault was bad enough. The good part is we dropped VW in 1983. Hallelujah.
 
Omg, I remember the Premier/Monaco.... Had the strangest Trans, ZF... alot of final drive noise, trans was over 5 grand warranty cost.... I made a ton of money on warranty repair on the Premier/Monaco, most of the labor times got lost in translation when converted to Chrysler warranty guide, good ole times when we could actually make a living doing honest warranty repair and not digging into customers pockets for cp work, Chrysler TC Maserati was also another good one, all labor repair times where "AT" actual time, we had a few of them roll around the shop for years......Best times I had was working at a Chrysler multi franchise on the US mexican border, I got to work on some really neat Export stuff from the across the border, Stratus Turbos, Jeep Grand Cherokee TSI's and Dodge Ram Chargers based on the 1994 BR front end and sorta Durango DN rear..... Mexico Chrysler used Real Dana 44's in alot of things I remember....The dealer ship on the mexico side had alot of problems fixing stuff as they did not factory train the techs, so I got a ton of stuff from them and charged them what I wanted to,Export warranty does not apply in the USA :)

Whats an R5? I still remember my first clutch in a front wheel drive car in the 1980's , Caddy Cimmaron!

Working at an independent in the 1980's was very interesting, manufactures feeble attempt to produce cleaner emmsions vehicles; Closed loop feedback carbs, fuel injected Imperials with the strange floscan fuel sensor, 300 hard plastic vac lines running all over the engine bay on Ford stuff, EEC 1 you needed the break out box and I-Bob to just get DVOM readings........

Overall vehicles have gotton better, last longer and easier to fix if you understand them, but when u do get a strange problem not the mainstream is when you lose your butt and it gets hard........

I got off the Chrysler/Dodge line in 2006 and transfered to the body shop side of the dealership doing body shop mechanical repair for insurance company repairs on all makes, the money was good again and you got paid for the work you did, but as time went on the dealership and insurance companies get greedy again and want to cut corners, few choice words and me not going to affect the safety of the customer doing stuff that would not let me sleep at night , I no longer work for the automotive repair industry since 2009 after 24 years....... I do stuff at home fixing vehicles and motorcycles on my terms and take care of my disabled better half....... I nearly dont have the same income of 100k plus a year, but I am very happy, I dont run myself into the ground for the sake of a dollar, sleep better at night and slowed the age process down,....... lol, all this talk about old recalls really stirred up some memories!

my Mom bought a 77 Chrysler New Yorker in 1979, that was my first lean burn car I ever worked on, swear had the lean burn box on the air cleaner changed 3 times in 2 years..... I was very young and just learning about cars, I knew nothing about electronic anything, I put a points type distribator and a plain old ThermoQuad carb and no more probs.......

No more beating on the lean burn box and pouring water on it on the side of the road........:gonnablow

The one on my 91 will pop out if it's under a lot of tension, I haven't driven the 88 often enough (and it's an auto) to notice if it has the same issue.

I just helped a friend with an 87 YJ a while ago, it came in with the horrible BBD e-carb + Ford computer and more vacuum lines than the space shuttle. It'd also been "improved" by several previous owners and the vacuum line setup resulted in me ripping most of my hair out trying to figure it out. Finally we fixed it by putting a weber on it and bypassing the computer completely, it now runs way better and the exhaust smells nowhere near as bad.

Who ever thought combining computers and carbs was a good idea? It is basically the worst of both worlds!

It still has no real power and he wants a 5speed instead of the factory auto (yep, it has a column shifted auto... what?!) so he is collecting parts to do a 4.0/ax15/np231/sye/8.25 swap, we are going to build a custom harness for it based off a 96 XJ one most likely. Already put a full custom dash harness in it to eliminate the ratsnest of terrible wiring (factory and non factory - it had been "upgraded" with a CJ7 dash and instruments, none of which worked and all of which were wired in truly inventive ways...)
