Jeep Commander

Last night I was watching Test Drive on the Speed Channel. They profiled and drove 2 new Jeep Commanders.
Very nice vehicles. 5.7L Hemi. Looks like this is the replacement for the now discontinued Cherokee. Still Love my XJ, but the Commander is very cool. BTW, I hate the Liberty. There was no way that could ever replace an XJ.

They need to bring back the "woody" model to really make a splash. At least its introduction will keep our XJ's from looking too dated.
jlex.

Damn I missed it, I spent a couple of weekends ago doing off road demo drives for the commander at camp jeep, drove almost 300 mi off road over 3 days. I liked it. That big hemi is awsome. On the show did they show a sliver one getting air off a hill ? that might have been me :D One photo op they setup was coming down off a hill into a small stream, peeled the front fender flares off when the front lower air dam folded under from hitting the water, it was attached to the fender flares and popped em right off like a set of wings :D

The Wrangler Unlimited is the closest thing to an XJ replacement available today, IMHO. It's a little less refined, ie no power anything, but an Unlimited Rubicon would be a much better starting point than an XJ. But I need 4 doors (two small children), so when I traded my TJ for a more family friendly vehicle, it was an XJ. Price was also a factor.

The rumors I've heard say there will be a 4 door Wrangler that is larger than the current TJ and will have more luxury option. Hopefully it isn't going to get TOO much larger. I've also heard rumors that due to competition with the H2/H3 there will be a Rubicon option of 33" tires. Ok, so maybe all this isn't really a modern replacement for the XJ, but it very well could be a replacement for MY XJ.

I seen the same show nutz seen.

I would be tempted to buy it.

It would be nice to go mildly off road with the a/c on

and the caffe latte in the cup holder.

We were supplied with latte, in self heating containers from wolfgang puck :chef:
Pop the bottom off, push button in the bottom and wait till the pink circle turned white and then it was ready, pop the top and hot latte, musta sucked down a couple of dozen of those things over the three days... :laugh3: :laugh3: someone said those self heating lattes were like $4 a pop.

To me, They look a little big for trail use :dunno: . What is the wheel base on those things? How wide?

And at $3/gallon, the world really needs another Hemi-powered vehicle right now...

Actually I was kind of impressed, damn thing did a couple of trails I would have had problems with in my XJ. It is also not that much longer than the XJ but when the rear row of seats up there is NO storage behind them. Spare is under the rear bumper and is lowered from a ratchet mechinism thats visible when you open the tailgate. Good buffer on the DVD player too, no disruption in the movie when crawling over rocks and dragging the skids, rear sunroofs do kind of bleed out the video picture unless you pull the shades on them. The OH SHIT handles are in the wrong spot for the passenger, they are up on the A pillar instead of over the window, thats in the front, in the rear they are right where they should be. Needs a touch screen on the command LCD, makes it hard changing sirrus stations using the button along the side of the screen frame while crawling over stumps and such. Plenty of pockets for storing stuff in the doors too. With the quadradrive and big hemi you can do 0-60 real quick when going up a dirt hill, quick enough to get air when you get over the top much to my suprise which was when I discovered it had decent seatbelts too, even the camerman was impressed :laugh3: . Never been a big fan of power doors and such, too damn many buttons, I'd usually end up opening at least one more window than I intended which was annoying because it let all that nice cool air out. Also with the hemi there was no noticible 'surgeing' when the compressor would cycle. Would I spend $45K on it, nope, I'd buy two TJ's first. For a family vehicle it would be outstanding though with the 8-6-4 engine it even gets good milage. I drew mine with a full tank of gas, drove it all weekend, about 300miles, and still had a half tank left according to the gauge but then it's a jeep and we all know that their gas gauges lie alot...

Does it have an actual frame? Or is it another Unibody, or 1/2 Uni ?

A Hemi with MDS. What is it? Like 26mpg?

more like 17 mpg hwy if they are the getting the same as people are reporting on the semi hemi WKs.

I saw that show, it was a joke. I could take my girlfriend's Neon on those dirt roads they had it on. Nothing even close to offroading.
