Well as most of you know ive been havin alot of problems with my rear axle making really bad noises, well yesterday it binded up enough for me not to want to drive it any more. so today i popped off the diff cover and figured out what was makin all the clunkin',

as you can see in the first pic the crosspin is loose wich ocasionally binds up between the ring and pinion. wich caused the pinion to chip as you can see in the 2nd pic

ouch! !

who had it apart last? is the cross-shaft held with a roll-pin or a bolt? thats the D44 right?
the last time the cover was off was in febuary, the noises didnt start till July and i ve put about 2,000 miles on it since july and now its to bad to drive, so now i need new r&p gears, spider gears and cross pin, but ive decided that im gonna throw in a lock right instead of stock spiders.

might be a good time to regear. stock carrier for bigger gears can be had for practically free. few more $$ and you can get the front done too

im gonna re gear later when i get my big tires and selectable lockers

Ok guys, seeming the center pin is junk and the carrier is probly junk to, im really considering a full spool, now if you guys think this is a really bad idea please speak up now or forever hold your peace.

just get a detriot or someother full carrier locker... remember this is your DD and it snows alot in NE
i know about the snow and im sure i can change my driving style. but also remember im on a really tight budget and dont have the big bucks for a detroit.

dont spool it yet Rob. like i said before. slap a new rear axle under it for the winter and keep the D44 for future build-up. i have a line on a 98 8.25 i'll let you have real cheap with 3.55 gears.

Then get a Lockright. You do NOT want a spool in your daily driver. Has nothing to do with snow -- a locker or a limited slip will be equally squirrely in snow -- it's on dry pavement that you're gonna hate it. Plus you'll chew up your tires three times faster than normal.

Mikes gonna hook me up with an 8.25 that im gonna use during the winter. But once spring comes and my Jeeps a trail rig then the 44 is going back in with a spool.

what's wrong with the carier. that dosn't look like it hurt the pinion too much i would want to replace it but you'll prob get buy for a long while with those gears just smooth out the burs on the pinion with a hand file and run it.

hey i just rembered i have a d44 carier what gears do you have.
