As some of you know, I've been struggling with (what I've just found out my cardiologist is calling "malignant") hypertension (HTN) for a couple of years now. He, I, and my GP are inclined to think it's caused by brain trauma suffered in NOV2005, and the GP hasn't had any luck treating it.
I finally got concerned when, during my last eye exam, my optometrist told me I had an "epi-retinal membrane" - which is usually caused by HTN, and is a sign that something should really be done (apart from the meds I've tried to date - that haven't worked. Sorry, but when my BP goes up slightly while I'm medicated, that tells me that it's not working...)
Of course, stress is a factor as well. Having your MIL living with you is enough to stress anyone out - throw in all of her health issues (and my having primary responsibility for them) and it's downright exhausting!
This week has been amusing - go see the GP on Monday to report what the cardiologist is doing, and get a new baseline. Found out I'd lost 7# (257#, down from 264#. Since we doubled the Depakote at the beginning of the month, and Depakote makes you gain weight, that was a pleasant surprise.)
Tuesday? 2D cardiac sonogramme. Sonogramme showed "enlarged cardiac capacity" (not malignant hypertrophy - simply remnants of physical conditioning from years ago, and quite healthy,) so that's not a significant problem. That's from the tech - I'll talk to the Dr. next month.
To-day? Renal artery/renal sonogramme. Tech said I have the healthiest kidneys she'd seen in seven years of doing this sort of thing. Blood perfusion is perfectly normal, Doppler showed excellent volume through the kidneys, and no stenosis or sclerosis of the renal arteries.
Yeah, that makes me feel better. I was coming due for some good news, dammit!
Sorry all, but I just felt like I should share that with more people than just my wife. Good news for the two of us is disagreeably rare...
