I have a 89 XJ..... and I need to figure out which D35 it has.. the c-clip or non c-clip. I am thinking of putting an aussie locker in it. According to Aussie lockers, both axles were in the 89.

on my 91 it is stamped on the upper right hand corner when looking at the back side of it. it will read something like 35c if it is.

So, stamped "35c" = c-clip.. then non c-clip will be stamped "35" ?

The best way to tell is to look at the axle tubes where they meet the brake backing plates. If it stay the same size as the rest of the tube then its a c-clip. If it gets bigger then its non c-clip. It gets bigger for the larger bearing.

If it's any consolation, both of my 89's use retainer plates rather than C-clips.

A "quick and dirty" check is to see the brake backing plate - there will be four bolts for the retainer plate, and you may be able to see the retainer plate itself behind the hub.

Failing that, next time you change the gear oil check the side gears - if you see a "pocket mill" recess with a C-shaped washer in it, it's a C-clip. However, the C-clip axle seems to be a late-model thing, and a ChryCo one at that (the 90-down, still being AMC-designed and -specced, don't seem to have it. I don't have C-clips on any of my four - 87, 88, and two 89's.)

Also correct that "D35C" stands for "Dana 35 Custom" rather than "C-clip" - those are housings that were shipped to AMC/ChryCo unstuffed, and final assembly was done in Toledo #2. (Source - ChryCo OEMR Parts Catalogue.)

I believe the Non C clip types were used from '84-'89.

Dana 35C - The "C" does not stand for c-clip. It stands for "custom"

The information given above is correct
You have a Non C clip version that year
(Unless someone has installed a newer axel)

Even though thats not what it stands for, it still holds true. My 90 has c clips...
It does not hold true, because the non c-clip axles used from '84 thru '89 were also designated 35C

Right, the stock axle in my 89 YJ was stamped 35C and had no c-clips. The only difference in the lunchbox lockers is the center pin. If you can get the correct center pin, then you are golden.
