Is it still 2001?

Cottontail

Three-De Off-Road
Location
Nashville, TN
Last night we drove by the local Jeep dealer (who I won't ever deal with) and my wife said, "they have a couple old XJs like you want." I love when my wife speaks Jeepcode!!!

Anyway, I went over to look today...just to price them out, as I am in the market over the next 8 weeks for a second one. They had a 1992 with 267xxx for $2999 and a 1990 with 162xxx for $3999. Both were pretty ragged out.

So, the salesman came out and asked if he could help. I told him that I was looking for another Cherokee. I had driven Cottontail to the dealer and he was parked next to these two sale units.

He pointed to a 1998 XJ for $10,999 and asked if I liked that one. I told him, "I don't want a new one." His response..."none of these are new. This is the used car lot."

Holy Crap...knock me over with a feather. I didn't know that! I guess I need a new watch, because mine says it is 2001!

I explained that I meant the new body style--'97+ and that I wanted a '96 or older. He asked which of the 2 older ones I liked and I said, "neither." He didn't say another thing...not an "ok," a "thank you," or a "check with us later, as we get them in frequently." He just turned and walked away.

Time to hit the want ads!

His prices are insane. I drove by a local used car lot a couple of days ago that had a 98 or 99 with $3995 in the windshield. He wants that for a 90?????

Those are ridiculous prices.I picked up my '97 from a wholesaler with 124,000mi. for $3500.Other than a dent in the pass. rear door its in great shape.I did find a '92 when I was looking for $7900--I literally laughed at the dealer and walked away.Led picked up an '89 that needed a little work(brakes, tranny line and trac bar)but otherwise really good condition for $250.

We drove to Springfield, IL to look at a 2001 Limited that had 30,000 miles. It was a cream puff. They wanted $10,000. They gave us $5500 for a 2wd Xterra so we financed $4500.

Those are some rediculous prices. There is currently a 95 four door with the 4.0 and auto tranny in excellent condition with 85,000 miles on it for $1700.00. Full power interior, interior is in nice condition, new tires, new alternator, new battery, and a couple of other things. If I didn't have to replace a few things right now on my 85 I would be getting that for my wife as a DD.

Kim.

Egads, upper limit on really nice XJ is about $7K MAX and that puppy better be cherry for that price, as for $10,000... hey if that saleman wants a new boat tell him to get a scecond job..
It's like that around here for TJ's, the lots and owners think the prices are tied to oil prices which is why I drove 4 hours to ct for a nice clean 97TJ for $3k. Granted, it needed a new soft top and front bumper but it came with slider windows, new tires, brakes, tune up.

I got my 93 Country for 2900. It has every bell and wistle they came with that year and has been taken very good care of. With 163000 I thought it sounded like good price, no dent or body damage besides clear coat going on the roof, but that expected. Plus XJs seem to be more expensive in Texas, dont know why though????

Shop around.

I got a beautiful 88 4.0 with 135000 miles for 1500!!!

Professionally kept and rarely used!!! (t-case used 4 times!!!!)

I've got a buddy with a real clean 90. At least the body and interior is real clean. Its got 220,000 miles on it and seems to run good. He bought it real cheap because they told him in needed a new steering collum but ended up only needing an adjustment to the linkage for the ignition switch. Anyway he put a new rear main in it and now can't afford to keep it.

He wants a 1000.00 bucks.

i got mine (2001) in Northampton, MA for 11,000 in july

54,000 miles

without the grille guard

KBB at the time was over 14,000

Got my 1988 LIMITED XJ for $150 about four years ago. Needed a fuel pump, though. Oh yeah, had around 41,000 miles on it. ( Man how I LOVE old people!!) Traded a running SBC for my '88 MJ last summer, all it needed was exhaust work. How I love the dummies that do not know what they have!
