looked around but i must be putting in the wrong search terms

how hard is it to change out a complete interior from an 97+ into a 96- ?

i know about the parking brake, but besides the center console.

interior is fine right now, but need new seats soon. so if i start collecting parts need to know if i am able to one for one swap a 97+ in.

thanks. (still looking on search threads, but get this one going as well)

Depends on how far into the swap you're looking to go. The dash would be quite a project - several differences in the way they mount up. The best threads about doing an old to new XJ/MJ interior can be found over on www.comancheclub.com where lots of guys have "updated" their MJ's to '97+ looking rigs.

Center consoles fit pretty easily with some minor plastic modification to the very front edge of the console. Updating the e-brake set up is a bit more involved as you need to trim the trans tunnel opening and then figure out how to connect the new brake handle assy to the older e-brake set up. Most opt to get the full e-brake setup from a '97+, drill and bolt the cable "bucket" bracket to the unibody like it was on the newer rig and then put the newer cables on the old axle.

Seats from the '97+ rigs will bolt in to a '96 as the floor pans were the same. The seat brackets sit on the floor differently between '84-'95, and '96 & up.

can you post up the link to that thread?

I was thinking about doing the same since I have my whole 98 interior still from my wrecked heep and thought it'd be cool in my 96....

seems like wiring would be a pain to switch too...

Seems like a lotta work for some darn seats. Spend 250 and get the checker/o'reily special "race seats". They are actually comfortable and hold you in place well(had em in an old Toyota project)

hehe, not just for seats. panels are comming off the door (could redrill and use new tabs) and the back plastic/dash is sun faded and dry rotting (slowly).

its going to have to happen eventually (keeping this for quite a long time) and finding a pre 96 with the same color interior is probably not going to happen.

this is the thread i found, not a walk through, but good info

What color do you have? Pics?

no pics, but its a dark blue.

found one in the yard that had baby/powder blue (was an 87), but it didnt match

Oh yeah, yeah, like this?

That's my buddy's former rig just after he got the Rock Hard 4x4 cage put in.

That is a difficult color to find. I sent a 4dr to the crusher a couple months ago that had that color in it and I really debated about pulling all the trim.....

yeah. ive only seen mine and that powder blue one. everything else is the grey/tan/red.

the driver seat is pretty fubar, can feel the upright on the left side. pasenger seat has a broke cable. other then that the material is still good with very little rips (mainly around the knobs/levers) rear seat is good still as is the carpet. redid the headliner and soundbar (which i have to pull, have a leak in roof)

other then the dryrot and sun damage it really is not bad, but given enough time and it will need replaced. plan on driving this to 500k since everything is replaceable.

hehe. sure it will, just need to replace a couple things and it will be like that rock pile never happened

nope, upper control arm and steering stabalizer. (that wasnt from the rock pile)

and rear tires, reason for the speed to begin with. couldnt get traction, and once i did i went

Save yourself the effort and get a vehicle with a real frame, this unitbody shite is annoying the hell out of me. I'm spending more money/effort trying to make it as strong as a real framethan I would just building a vehicle with a frame to begin with. Damn my stupid love for these soccer mom wheeling machines. :D
