Insurance

Here's the deal, (I have been waiting for this statement) Lets say you are riding with me, I roll, you are injured, insurance companys are called, they look at the rig and decide that even though, it is titled as a 2000 XJ, it is no longer an XJ.

It is not street legal, it has modified suspension, breaks, etc. The underwriter, says "Why was this insured as a car? We are not paying this claim because you were not honest in disclosing thew actual nature of the vehicle."

So, I hit some one on the trail, I hurt them, he can't work for six months, I loose my house or have to pay him $XXX.XX a month for the next 20 years.
It is not worth it.

I will part out my rig before wheeling again.

My insurance agent is a veryl good friend of mine, we tip a few together quite often, he was being honest. If your agent is letting you get by by insuring your tube buggy as a '95 Jeep, he is being dishonest and I dread the day anything happens to you.

So, who do you insure your tube buggy with?

I live with the risk.

My jeep is not insured, and is registered as an 'Off Road Vehicle' in the state of WA and CA.

I've thought about getting 'collector car' or classic car insurance... but liability wasnt ever my concern - my concern was theft, of burning to the ground, or my trailer fawking up like The Dude's did.

Do some searching on Pirate, this comes up every now and then. Can't remember offhand who they go through, Geico maybe?

bill (RCman) has been looking into this a bit. last i spoke with him he was looking into the home-built vehicle route as it seemed to be the only one remotely applicable. granted, it means bringing in an appraiser and safety inspector and paying them to do so, but that could be $ later saved in liability. good luck.

I believe if the attached original VIN numbers say its a 2000 XJ then that is what it is. To what degree the vehicle is modified is always arguable, but in the end it is still an XJ.

This is the truth of the matter. If the DMV is recognizing your vehicle as an
2000 Jeep Cherokee your insurance company should also. You may need to report modifications but in the end it is still a Cherokee.
Now having said that...
Your case is a bit different than most since you have been cancelled, but, if
under your original policy, you had an incident, your insurance company is obligated to cover the lost even if there is substantial modification made to your XJ.
Many of us who own sand cars have never had insurance on them, it really hasn't been an issue until most recently. There are insurance companies out there that have policies to cover these vehicles. Geico advertises that they have insurance for power sports vehicles. It is not expensive and probably worth your time to look into it.

One question though, have you looked into how your homeowners insurance would handle any claim against you?

I wasn't canceled.
I will not be renewed, big difference.

Geico did that to me on the XJ. They said it was because it was modified, something that I openly disclosed at the start of the policy.

I am now insured with Progressive. I once again disclosed that it was modified, and added more coverage to cover the mods.

I'd like to see what you come up with but it is my understanding if the vin is recognised by the state and the state allows it to be tagged then the insurance companies have to follow with that id. I do know there are OHV policies available for ATV's and such but have never had one. Mine was done through State Farm but now is with Progressive.

It is my only concern

Does this vehicle ever see pavement, or just a trailer and off road areas?

Do you have concerns other than a passenger/yourself getting injured or worse in an off road accident?

Put it on a trailer, never drive it in public, roll cage with door bars or doors, quality suspension seats, mandatory harnesses and helmets, done?
