INSULATED HOOD

lol funny reading how these "newer" (1997-2006) xj's don't have the hood-insulation. while my 89 "bucket-of-bolts" (who called the xj this? lol) still has the factory installed under-hood insulation in it. :D
figured that since it's there & not falling apart, i'm gonna leave it up there untill it does start falling apart.

haha....I'm the "bucket of bolts" guy
I had the fiberglass insulation on a '93 which looked like hell because bits of it were falling down
but not on the '01
guess this should be a poll

i used to have it but it was drooping and rubbing on stuff under the hood. i pulled it years ago. all it did was collect the under hood grime, dirt, oil from leaks etc. been happy without it.

My 96 has one, my 91 with a hood off a 97 doesn't, my 98 with a hood from a 99 doesn't.

I don't remember if the 91's stock hood had one, and the 98 never had a stock hood when I owned it. I doubt it's for NVH reasons since both the late model hoods I have are insulation free.

EDIT: list...
84-86 gas underhood insulation = 5500 1887
84-86 diesel underhood insulation = 5500 4899
87-90 underhood insulation = 5501 4347
91-92 underhood insulation = 5502 6308
93 underhood insulation = 5521 5539
94-95 build dates through 12-3-94 underhood insulation = 5521 5404
95-96 build dates 12-4-94 up underhood insulation = 5521 7068
97 underhood insulation = 5521 7068AC
98 underhood insulation = 5521 7068AB
99 = no underhood insulation I can find
00-01 underhood insulation = 5521 7068AE

Why it isn't installed in some XJs and is in others is beyond me. It looks more like it's trim package related like ehall said.

Hey folks that hood insulation blanket is just that - it's "insulation". It protects the hood
paint from premature failure caused by engine heat. It also suppresses some engine
noise to a certain extent.

A fire suppression device? Poppycock. That's an urban myth.

A fire extinguisher is a fire suppression device.

I doubt it's for NVH reasons since both the late model hoods I have are insulation free.
That's because all of the later-year models were cheap cars

The earlier years they actually referred to it as the EXTRA-QUIET INSULATION PACKAGE

Standard on the Laredo and Limited, optional on the Pioneer, and not available on the Sport or Base models

probably optional/standard per the model -- I'm guessing left --> right is base --> Laredo models... Makes sense, my '87 is a Laredo & its got the insulation. Got the arm rest/console, carpetting, tie-down hooks w/ "skid strips" -- not that this list is for an '87, just lookin at some comparable items.

The characters in the key refer to the Base, Sport, Pioneer, Laredo, and Limited models (this is from around 87ish, the RENIX era). A dash means it was not available for that model, an X means it was optional for that model, and an S means it was standard feature for that model.

The whole brochure is around somewhere in JPG scans, I just uploaded the one page

That clearly doesn't apply to mid 90s models (not surprising since it's for an '87), my '96 Sport came with:
* cargo area tie-downs
* cargo cover
* full center console
* extra quiet insulation package
* tachometer
* interior lights group
* power windows / power locks

I wonder how many late model XJs (00/01 especially) ended up with options that "weren't available" on their trim level simply because the factory was trying to reduce excess inventory.

So no one with a '99 has the hood insulation/soundproofing/fire retardant? My '99 does not, and I don't even see where the 13 clips would go.

Be glad you don't have it.
As it ages, becomes permeated with grease and oil it's is more likely to cause an engine fire than prevent one. hehe
