Thursday afternoon, I was backing out of a parking spot in town ... looked in the rear view and saw a car coming ... I jerked the wheel when I pulled forward and popped the heads off the bottom two steering gearbox bolts. Had to clamped the gearbox to the frame so I could line up with the flatbed wrecker. Had it hauled home.

Today, I made up a new standoff plate (used 1/4" plate) for the inside of the framerail. I had some brand new 7/16" dia. x 5" grade 8 bolts, so instead of making the standoff plate 3/4", I made it 1.25". This will move the gearbox inward about a half inch. I can't see any problem with doing this ... but does anybody know of any issues before I mount the gearbox tomorrow? I also cut some filler plate for the cutouts on the front bumper mounting plate, drilled the gearbox mounting holes, and welded them in. Hopefully with this added plating it will take some of the strain off the framerail.

Oh yeah ... sorry Ramsey. I'm busy today and tomorrow.

PS: If moving the gearbox inward about a half inch is not advisable, will an ordinary die cut threads in a grade 8 bolt?

Shouldn't be a problem.
Just adjust your drag link to make a half inch shorter.

Driving an armored stocker with decent tires is fun, I get to use the throttle instead of worrying about braking stuff. At this rate I may never finish my '97.
