So i started getting some chain noise coming from my transfer case a while ago (no floors). Is it easier to swap a new chain or to swap in a new transfer case? I saw theres an NP242 on Cragislist for $150 with a hack and tap installed and ive seen a few NP231s for $75-100

Doing your own rebuild is a good learning experience, but you won't save any money. Cases are cheap and plentiful.
If you want to do it just to do it, go for it. If you're looking for the easiest way, a new used case is much less work.
