several months ago i took my 1st step in almost 15 years at getting a new job. nothing came from it. today i took step number 2. i just put my resume in to about 6 local factories. not having to high of hopes seeing as though i dont have my degree yet. but i figured maybe if i just start pumping my resume into these places one may bite.
at this point, because of my age and the fact that im completely changing career paths, i am just hoping to get my foot in an electrical job so i can start adding "experience" to my resume.
we shall see.

i'm older than you and i'm just starting a full time job that will hopefully turn into a real career for me...but i still don't know. i had a full time job last year, but i knew it was only temporary. you can do it!

my only issue with my age is that for 15 years i have been selling car parts.
now i am trying to get a well paying life long career as an industrial electrical maintenance technician and no experience outside of school.
i don't doubt that this will eventually work out. its just, i finally sent my resumes in after talking about it for years.
hard part is that every body says min such and such years experience, but if they all say that then how could anyone new ever get in.
i did put one in for an operator, assuming it may be a easier obtainable job that i could try an transfer to electrical later down the road.
i also know a guy over at ComEd. sent him an email also.

They all have minimum experience, when I graduate college I had 1.5 Co-op/internship experience at 3 different companys (requirement for graduating). I was applying for up to 5 years experience, I ended up getting hired for a position that was listed for 5-7 years experience with almost no knowledge for the position (Diesel Calibration Engineer) so there was a lot of training.
Most companys will hire the right person (character wise) with minimal experience and then train them for the job.
At least that is what I have seen so far in my career and when hiring people.

You'd be surprised. Only reason I'm an apprentice electrician is because I fell into at work. I would think you could get your foot in the door fairly easy as an industrial maintenance guy if you can prove you're taking classes and put your skills into words at the interview.

Seriously tho, the only thing that I'd be curious of is how much of my engineering is still being used. It does look like they didn't appreciate all the stickers.
Either way, someone is using it as intended, it appears and its on a trailer going to an event that I couldn't afford/justify taking it to, so I hope they have a good time.
