Important

The what does Bell do right list is shorter.

Imagine buying a brand new car. Drive it off the lot. On the way home, the transmission fails.

Now imagine there's no warranty. And the only place you can buy a new transmission from is the dealership you bought the car from.

Or, you can have the transmission rebuilt. Except the only people that have the parts to repair it are the dealership you bought the car from.

Or you could just take the loss and sell the car to someone. Except nobody wants your car because they have to get it fixed by the same people that you have to pay to fix it and they don't want to deal with the hassle.

So you pay for it. And the American economy keeps spinning.

I hope that was just an example because I think repair costs would be the least of my concerns if my helicopter's transmission failed.

But wow, that sucks. I don't suppose they're in a hurry to certify anyone else's parts as fitting their helis, either :confused1

In the commercial world, lots of people make lots of parts for helicopters. That keeps the manufacturer honest. So they make parts that last and they keep them on the shelf. That way they're selling parts, just like a car company would.

In the military world, your military aircraft is copyrighted. The parts come from approved contracted vendors and they have to get those specifications from the manufacturer. So they don't make parts unless you pay for them and they don't have to last their service life because you don't have anywhere else to go.

The $80 million an aircraft isn't where they make money. It's the $400k every time you turn in a gearbox for metallic contamination and they take it apart and put it back together for you.

It's literally like having one dealership to take your car to. You pay it because you have no other option. Bell (in my experience) seems to be a little worse than most. I've had gearboxes chip out and be removed with 80 flight hours on them and they're supposed to be a 6800 flight hour component.

Jesus christ.

yikes...a gear box failing in a helicopter sounds like a bad time.

got a check in the mail from a side gig i've been doing...its not really frequent and it takes a little while to accumulate the money, but its my new jeep fund. basically i am creating and editing hold messages for a theatre. they send me all the recordings and i put them together...its $100 to assemble all the pieces (takes about an hour) and $25 for any edits. first check was $250 and i just submitted another invoice for $400 for March and April. once i sell a few things from the parts wj, i should have enough to get some new toys for all 3 of the jeeps :)

were alcan springs the leaves that were on the jeep that dan built??

i found a set of 4.5" leaves for a cherokee for $100 in good shape...seems like that is way under priced

I shorted the switch that shuts the motor off if you get off of the seat.
The moron who invented that safety feature must not have had to pick up sticks and dog toys.
or weighed 130 lbs. Every bump I hit the damn thing shuts off.

I believe he had alcans on the first jeep.

Jesus christ.

you have no idea. I've heard many examples of those sorts of things. The whole mess is setup to make sure the contractors get paid well.

TPS seems to have fixed the XJ. I probably slowed down the valve cover leak too, got almost a full turn on all the bolts. One of them was hand-tight.

Now I just need to get going on the laundry list for the Crawl.

was hoping to get the mj on the road today, but alas, its not in the cards. melissa has to go to her office in the city, so i have to leave about 8 hours early. hopefully i can find a new oil pressure sensor while i'm out there and then i will know how bad this sucker is leaking from the rear main...it would also be nice to know what my oil pressure is...

As an engineer at a lawn mower engine manufacturer these have been a couple of good pages. There are actually ANSI/ISO standards that manufactures choise to follow for the safety features on them believe it or not. So many damn safety features on each piece of equipment... To save you idiots from hurting yourselves and sueing the company.

I don't doubt that a bunch of lawyers got together and drafted what you needed to have for the ansi people.

it doesn't make them any less annoying for people that aren't complete morons.

Don't get it twisted. It's a lot less "so you don't hurt yourself" and a lot more "so you don't sue the company."

Cub Cadet doesn't give two shits if I hurt myself. They care about the lawsuit because some judge 30 years ago gave a lady a ton of money because her coffee was hot.

I'd rather live in a society where dumb people die because they're dumb and us smart people survive.
