Important

well apparently all the mj needed to start was a good tap on the starter. fired right back up today after having to push it into the driveway. i think the starter is just a little krusty from sitting for a year. since that took all of about 5 minutes, i managed to also pull all the coolant hoses, the front clip and the radiator. going to try to get the open swap done tomorrow, then onto the oil leak. i think its a combo leak mostly coming from the valve cover, OFA and the sending unit...there is a lot of wet oil right around the area of the ofa and the sender...

now for the idiot question of the day...how the hell do you tighten the belt on a renix? i've only ever put belts on my post 97 xj's. i only looked at it for a minute, but i had to go help melissa get the baby ready to go visit some family this afternoon.

The power steering bracket is the tensioner.
One 13mm(?) bolt in the front needs to be loosened, then there is a bolt to the right (air box area) that is the actual tensioner.

Went to beeds Lake. Found water and trees. Still not as good as MI.

Loosen top bolt, back 2 bolts and nut under pully then the tension bolt is by air box as 89 said.

this.

top through bolt

one nut on the bottom that secured the tensioner bolt, it's on the front directly under the reservoir.

Two bolts on the rear. You'll want a 13mm ratchet wrench for the top one cause the fuel line is in the way.

it's easy to over tension, so go looser than you think. Torque the ones on the rear first, top bolt next. Torque the nut on the tension bolt last.

Yep. I think I overtensioned mine, new water pump is already squalling on startup.

Question -

The XJ starts and idles fine, after about 1-2 min it stumbles and just about dies, but saves it self and revs up. Repeats this for a while, sometimes falls on its face while driving and comes back.

TPS? It was fine until I hosed the engine bay down after WF, didn't think I got it wet though.

I thought about that too, but it seems like the fuel is getting cut out when idling, you can hear it sucking air while sputtering like it's not getting fuel.

Would IAC cause it to fall on it's face at highway speed though?

No. Its called the IDLE air controller. :poke: lol
Your throttle plate is open going down the road so the air doesnt need the bypass path that the IAC provides.

Im not sure what your problem is, Maybe TPS....

Mine does almost the same thing, runs perfect in open loop but on the transition to closed loop it drops to ~300rpm for a second then comes back up to "normal" (~800). Im thinking mine is caused by over fueling and the computer cutting out a bunch of fuel at once on transition, just a hunch from looking at my LTFT numbers.

Speaking of the iac, I need to clean mine again. Forgot how much it is a pain to get the bottom screw out.

Analog multimeter. Check your TPS for dead spots.
I havent been in the tech area or anything in while, I has teh dumz. Maybe the MAP could do something like this too? When is the last time its had a tuneup?
Your "stumble" after about a minute sounds just like what mine does when it goes into closed loop, which makes me think its a sensor.

I think every renix owner should have an mt2500, btw.

A co-worked told me last night that he almost called me recently. He's a guy that I don't see very much cause he works afternoons and I barely know him, so my interested was peaked.

He said that his brother was trading in his 04 Wrangler and just prior to trading it in, the head gasket blew. They only gave him $500 trade in and was going to call me to see if I wanted it.

mac 'I almost started crying' gyvr
