Important

Principle?

I'm surprised that this surprises you? After the way you've talked about your students in the past. It was only a matter of time.

K "what goes around, comes around" man
Sounds like the principal was on his side :dunno:

Correct. Phone selected wrong spelling.

But now that someone wants the long story, here it goes.

New district, new school, better shop/equipment diverse student demographics/etc. School starts full time last Wednesday. All classes going great. I spend the first week of class, every class, covering safety. After having a co-worker blow metal shavings into my left eye (I had safety glass on, but looking up. He wasn't following safety procedures) 2 years ago, I am all about safety. I go through a power-point on it, several videos, a shop walk-through pointing out all safety procedures and precautions. Mind you, this is the 'advanced class' that students take after small engines and Basic Autos. I assign the book chapter on safety as well as the assessment questions at the end. Student are informed from the beginning they must pass the safety test with 100% to be in the shop.

Today: Students come in, I hand out test. Several times during the test I have to remind students there is no talking during a test. Wait until students finish test (multiple choice: T/F: Short Answer) and instruct them to write extra credit at the bottom of the page. My question was "When looking at a Hybrid vehicle, what color(s) might you find identifying the high voltage system?" With that I get an uproar from several students of "We haven't covered that?!?" I said that's why its extra credit.

This begins a outburst of "if Mr. %%%%%% were here, we'd be in the shop working by now!" and "I don't want to sit here" etc.
I ask "And what might you be working on?"
Response "Washing my truck... Vacuuming out my car... Installing an exhaust tip on my tailpipe..."
Me: "You filled out an application to be apart of this 'advanced' class, within the description it discusses learning proper shop procedures among other advanced auto services, you also know you need to pass the test to get into the shop, 90% on a Safety test is only 9 out of 10 fingers".

More "back-talk" as the principal calls it ensues and I ended the argument with this statement: "I was hired to teach auto mechanics, I will continue to teach auto mechanics to those that want to learn. If you have issue with that, or this isn't what you want to do, go to the counselling office and change classes, you can leave now if you want, there's the door."

Students challenge new teachers to see what they can get away with. I don't tolerate it or any horseplay in the shop. I openly invite you kman, or anyone else, to come visit and observe my classes.

Have you began to bash on them for not knowing how to do something yet?

I have had teachers like that and it is easy to pick up on. I pray that my child never has to undermined by a teacher like you seem to do to your students.

You have twice, that I know of, on a public forum bashed on your students. But then expect not to receive that treatment back?

I'm not here to start a war, but you sir are in a position that is ALWAYS under numerous watchful eyes.

K "treat others the way you want to be treated" man

I'll go to bat for Austin here. Sure, he "bashed" his students on a public forum. However, I suspect he hasn't done this to their faces. It's one thing to vent about your co-workers or subordinates around the campfire...which is what Important kinda is. A campfire. As long as he treats the students accordingly I wouldn't have any issues with him complaining about them to us.

In my opinion, teachers are the most under-appreciated profession. They, as well as Austin (when dedicated as they should be), spend tireless hours outside the classroom as well as in. And I know for a fact that Austin has spent countless hours contacting representatives for class materials, funding and equipment. Not to mention his own personal donations.

I have had teachers that I look up to and still contact from time to time who had the same attitude that I perceive Austin has in his class. And I'm sure they have complained about their students as well. I have witnessed teachers put students in their place. I for one, fully back Austin on his feelings. He's allowed to have an opinion on his students, good or bad.

As long as he keeps his level of professionalism on par with what I imagine he does in the classroom, he's good cheese in my book. I don't care what he says in outside venues.

I have no real idea why you are ball busting here kman, Austin seems to be in the right here to me. Mostly as a former student.

I think the point is they want to play around and do basic/ricer/personal chore stuff instead of learning advanced maintenance/repair, which is stuff that is going to require a safety lesson if Austin wants to keep his job and the students want to keep their knuckle skin and/or fingers.

This isn't a campfire though. This is the World Wide Web, were anybody can access almost anything. Students, peers, ANYBODY.

Could end up bad in my opinion.

x2

hell... i think i joined naxja when i was 18 or 19, but found it much earlier than that. what if one of his students found their way into the MWC here. there has been plenty of information given to know EXACTLY who he is. all one needs to do is find all of his posts via a search. then imagine if this student took the posts to the school board, citing multiple rants... its just bad news bears...

i know some of these people here might be good buddies. but make a phone call man, take a friend out to the bar and rant, or hell, vent around the campfire... but your words are public here, and forever imortalized. they may get burried under pages, but it doesnt take a lot of digging to find these posts.

It would be different if it was one of the forums I am on that is complete secret website (only users can see anything that happens on the forum). This one, anyone can see posts, I agree. Members area, possibly. I will say to vent your frustrations here is better then any other place.

This whole conversation reminds me of this cartoon.

If my kid came screaming to me that his teacher was bad mouthing him over something on the web I'd march down to the school and find out from that teacher what I needed to do to get my kid to perform better. Not blame the teacher.

The whole teachers are underpaid argument is crap, they only work 2/3s of the year, if you calculate their true hourly rate they make pretty good money.

I wouldn't deal with 30 dickhead kids I'm not allowed to discipline for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 8 months a year for what they get paid. In fact there isn't enough money in the world to get me to do that.

Now, college level? Sure. Most kids are paying or their parents are paying and you generally don't have to justify a bad grade if it was deserved. Helicopter parents are starting to hassle colleges now though... stop bubble wrapping the world dammit.

Not ball busting, stating my opinion, no different than what you just did.

^^^ That's the truth!!

he chose to deal with children every day all day.

This quote here is why I feel the way I do about Austin being hard on his kid, anyone with children would not appreciate their childs teacher talking about them this way.

Something I wrote to show how I kind of feel at the end of the school year, don't get me wrong, I love my job and what I do its just everyone 'vents' sometimes... Based off of "F You till Monday"

“Screw You till Monday”

Don’t take this personal, but I hate being here on time…
When I see the students outside, I’ve considered taking my life…
After 40 hours of hearing them whine, let me make just one thing clear…
The last thing I want to do is stay right here…
So Screw You till Monday, don’t try to come and take a quiz…
Screw You till Monday, I’m a teacher, we’re not friends…
After 5 days straight of dealing with their crap, I’m ready to run away…
So kindly, get out of my face…
So Screw You till Monday, oh politely I say go home…
Screw You till Monday, stop asking questions I just want to be alone…
I see you more than my wife and [theoretical] kids, so when 3:30 hits know this…
Screw you till Monday, screw you till Monday…
Screw you till Monday….
I hope you get hit by a bus.

They chose to be teachers, its a free market if they don't like what they are getting paid to do what they do, then do something different (this is what I tell people who work for me when they start complaining).

This is so true, you see it so much when you are in a supervior/management position also.

Yes, this is true, have you never complained about a dickhead customer on the internet?

I know for sure I've bitched about every previous job on the internet, even though I did enjoy a lot of things about some of them. This job? I have ONE coworker who pisses me off, and he pisses everyone else off too and we mostly just ignore him when he's being annoying/wasting everyone's time, so that's that.

I don't think I have ever bashed a customer online, for fear of it getting back to a person then starting a bigger shit storm.

What would you be doing to it? Or don't you know yet?

No idea. I'd like to do machining but there is a possibility of ending up on the assembly line.

If Ho Bag complained about a dick head customer here so you think he would get much business? I doubt it. I'm all about venting to friends, which i consider all of you, but the shit that was said was kinda inappropriate to be directed towards kids.
I'm all about old fashion discipline but if a teacher wrote that crap about my son I'd go off.
