So I picked up a 8.8 rear axle from an 01 Explorer with discs, LSD and 4.10's(from the local auto recycler). I didn't even bother to pop the cover and inspect it. Just grabbed it and brought it home.
Upon removal of the cover I found RUST and lots of it! Seems anything that was not sitting in the muck that was supposed to be gear lube was considerably rusty. The part that had me the most concerned was in between the ring gear teeth. I scraped and wire brushed the few that looked the best and it seems the rust got so bad it started pitting the faces of the teeth. I was hoping the search for a good axle was over. Looks like I'll be returning it for something different.

Pics will come hopefully tomorrow if its not raining. It needs washed and a good interior cleaning. As soon as I got home yesterday I had to go to work. Today was church and work.
Meh, the ZJ was alright, but it's nice to be in a XJ again.

Josh, I didn't even bother asking how many 8.8's they had at the yard. Its one of the places they pull everything from the vehicle and set the parts on shelves and most likely the parts sit for a very long time until some unsuspecting shmuck(me) asks for a part. I'm gonna have to bring some sockets and tools next time and pull the cover before I leave. That way I can say "nah" and they get me another one before I make the trip home.
I paid 200 for it and was hoping for a decent axle. Guess there was a reason it was so cheap. I'd rather pay 200 for a clean axle I can swap in even if I have to put gears in later.

Can anyone tell me what some of the symptoms would be for a Dana 30 with possible bearings going out in it? I just put new breaks on my Jeep and i'm still getting a bad vibration when i'm slowing down. Was thinking maybe the pinion bearing or something.

What do you mean on moving the pinion? I just checked and the pinion doesn't move up or down or side to side. It only has the little bit of movement when you rotate the drive shaft. The axle u-joints are also nice and tight. I did swap out my passenger side axle shaft cuz the u-joint was bad and just replaced it with an extra abs shaft I had. Haven't had any problems with it until this past week or so.

Just that, see if the yoke moves up/down/side/side. There's always a small amount of rotational movement.

Wow, them Chicago area prices are murder! I paid $135 for my 8.8 but I think there was a $20 charge for pulling it. I can't remember. Killed too many brain cells since then.
At either rate, if you're happy with the price, who am I to tell you otherwise? Good call on taking the tools to give it a good once-over. I didn't do that. Got lucky. Got lucky twice, actually. It was the only axle with 4.10s and discs in the yard. It also had an open carrier, which I wanted anyway since I put in a Detroit.
A Detroit makes a $135 axle really expensive.

well...she's ugly...but sitting at a friends house halfway to the shop. we are going up there for the 4th to watch fireworks, should FINALLY get to pull some parts then. the motor in this sucker runs flawlessly, makes me think twice about selling it. it has 165k, but for whatever reason the bottom end was rebuilt less than 20k ago and it runs like a top...great oil pressure, stayed nice and cool too. drove it 80 miles on swampers and long arms with worn out steering and no sway bar. it was a long ride up and down the windy mountain roads, but its no longer sitting on the po's property and thats what matters. some parts are in better condition than i remember, some are worse. regardless, for $800...i'll take it.

I tell you what if I were to see a police officer trying to get into my house or into my jeep I will be pressing charges for trespassing!!!!! So how would you feel to have a cop come up to your car or truck and set off the alarm because they wanted to check the doors and peek in side?
Then they do the same thing to a house, walk up to the windows and doors to see if they are unlocked, try that at my house and you will be hit with trespassing or shot or both! They call it PRIVATE PROPERTY for a reason!!!
