Important

Nothing major; wiring running everywhere to who knows what, bad floor patch job, leaky windshield, etc.

I knew from that start I was buying axles, suspension and tires with a body attached. If I have to swap it all over to another body in the future, so be it.

If my gears, locker, and carrier, deal did not come with carrier shims, do i need to get some?

didn't you buy an install kit?

Congrats on the kid!

Yup... the master install kit shoudl come with some. You need:
carrier bearings (cones and races)
carrier shims (except for an 8.25, none of those for an 8.25)
pinion bearings (inner, outer, w/ races and cones)
pinion depth shims
pinion preload shims or crush sleeve
possibly inner and outer oil slingers for the pinion depending on axle design
possibly pinion oil baffle depending on axle design (low pinion generally doesn't have one)
new pinion oil seal
new pinion nut, preferably x2
new ring gear bolts
new cross shaft retention rollpin if it's a non c clip axle, if it's a c clip axle with a cross shaft retention bolt you can reuse it
marking compound
all tools and knowledge/skills to do diff setup
for axles without side adjusters, I like to have a spare pair of carrier bearing cones to hone out and turn into setup bearings
for axles where pinion depth shims go behind the inner pinion bearing race, I like to have one of those to grind down and turn into a setup bearing

A good master install kit will come with at least all the shims required, the pinion seal, all the bearings except ones to make setup bearings, a set of new ring gear bolts, sometimes a new slinger or two, a new pinion nut, a crush sleeve if needed, and a tube of marking paste. Most don't come with a new rollpin, materials for setup bearings, a spare pinion nut, or a new oil baffle.

What axle?

I came across a tote in the barn of a few XJ parts if anyone wants them..29 spline shafts, a front long side w/ unit bearing, air bags, modules..other crap. It is all free if someone wants to pick it up. No shipping...it will sit until someone picks it up or the barn falls in.....which ever comes first.

Let me know via PM if anyone has interest.

this is what USA Standards website says

"This kit uses Koyo bearings and races. Included are carrier bearings and races, pinion bearings and races, pinion seal, complete shim kit, ring gear bolts, pinion nut, crush sleeve (if applicable), oil baffles and slingers (if applicable), threading locking compound, marking compound with brush and gasket. "

For the front yes. For the rear it depends on how back lash is adjusted on the axle you have.

(Edit) I see what axles now. Front yes. Rear no.

Post pics of what you have for install kits, preferably spread out like they are in those pics...

low pinion 30 you'll have 2 diameters of shims (a stack of carrier shims, a stack of larger diameter pinion depth shims) and a crush sleeve.

8.25 you will have 1 set of shims, just the pinion depth shims, and a crush sleeve.

Other than that the kits should mostly have the same contents. Don't mix the parts though, obviously.

not to fear. Robert from rwk says they are in there. says most people miss them. as i look closer i see a bag of shims he may not have noticed.

if i post a pic can you all confirm?

10-4 here it comes

Post em up, I haven't geared an 8.25 yet but it's less complex than a 30, and that's what I learned on.

I have a tool in my garage that was made special for the 8.25...

Anyone got a discount code for rws?

36mm side adjuster tool?

I have an old d30 axle nut, a piece of pipe, and a crummy extension bar set aside to make mine... gotta drag the welder out soon.

yup. I see at least 3 sizes of shims in there.

You won't be using the smallest (iirc), those are pinion preload, you'll be using the crush sleeve (bottom center of pic) instead.

Also I don't think you'll be using the pinion oil baffle (the slinger looking thing with the flare in it, right above the pinion nut) since it's a low pinion. The two other things up there are the inner and outer slingers.

The only thing I see missing from that set is setup bearings and a spare pinion nut for doing setup with. Oh, and did it come with setup marking paste (yellow paint looking stuff) and ring gear bolts? It's nice that it came with new axle tube seals as well.

yea i didnt realized it was not in the pic. bolts, paint and a brush are all there to.

thanks gents. got a little worried for a min there.

robert from RWK said because of the way they are packaged most people miss a few things just looking at it
