Okay, why is this an AW4, but this is the tag...

From what Ive found. Its a toyota transmission. Same one is in the tundra and tacoma I think. They were also in supras and a number of other cars. They were all based off eachother but some have different internal components. I have an overhaul book for the trans and it says its that model number.

Thats what I know about them from what Ive read. I could be wrong tho

It's not actually a Toyota trans, Toyota just used them too. Aisin Warner made them, sold them as the A340H (and probably other model numbers, check wikipedia) to Toyota, the AW4/30-43le/whatever to Jeep, etc.

Maybe it was originally a 2wd trans, but someone rebuilt it, or used as a parts donor for a rebuilt/frankenstein AW4 that ended up 4x4, and just didn't change the nameplate?

The main housing and all internals except the tailshaft are the same between the 4x4 and 4x2, it's just the tailhousing/4x4 adapter housing and tailshaft that change. Unfortunately you have to unstack basically everything in the tranny to get the tailshaft out, or a 2wd to 4wd conversion would be much easier.

I have two transmissions sitting in my garage, one that I just pulled out of a 98 Cherokee and the other one was out of a 99 Cherokee, both four wheel drive. both have the same tag on it

At least you didn't get yohned :roflmao:

I have no idea what's going on with your tranny collection.

If he showed up to a Naxja event with a pocket protector and tape on his glasses nobody would think twice about it.

He showed up at a NAXJA event in a van pulling an MJ on a tow dolly and in the cold, cold weather proceeded to fab up a rear bumper with tow hooks to meet the NAXJA requirements, only to wheel it the day after the event was over...

A supervisor at work today saw me blasting my rc drop brackets I picked up on here and asked what I was doing. Turns out he has owned wranglers for 15+ years. He asked why I didnt grow a pair and build long arms. By the end of the night we had scrounged up everything I need except bushings/joints. I even get to bend up whatever I need. He also says his son in law has a 500 acre farm with an abandoned gravel pit we can wheel about 20 min away from me. It was a good day! Now I have to see what and how I want to build them

when I took the picture of the tag, I told my son in law, Cameron, that I would expect Ken Stein to be the one to explain what every number meant and why, from memory.

you sir, have let me down. ;)
AW model numbers are something I've never understood. Especially how they can call the 2wd and 4wd completely different numbers.

I may wear glasses, but no tape and no pocket protectors :geek:

I really wish I'd made it out again for this year, that was a fun trip.

Oh, and the transmission in that turd of a van gave out around 500 miles after I got home.
