i have to admit...thats kinda cool

it's got air in it somehow.
at least a 5.9 is easier to rebuild than a 4.7...

air in it?

Could just be normal operation. Any open coolant system is designed to bleed air out through the overflow. It may not be serviced correctly and what you were seeing was the result of some boiling.

A flush and fill will probably fix it right up.

Outgassing in the bottle of a 6.0 diesel is an indication of blown head gaskets.

Chances are the system was low on coolant/running warm. The system pulled in everything in reservoir (if their was any) and then started taking in air. As it's cooling its releasing coolant/air back into the reservoir.

Next time its cold (tomorrow morning for example) open the radiator cap, top it off, and then make sure the reservoir is topped off as well, problem solved.

On a side note* Picked up a 5000 count container of 0.25 gram Air-soft BB's today. Turns out that was enough to make ~5 8oz bags (empty 1 bag into each tire + spare). I will be using these inside my new 33s for balance weight. I'll let you guys know how well it turns out...

Thank you both for the reply. I was thinking that it could be normal but it was very loud...louder than I've heard on any other vehicle.

The coolant looks pretty ugly...I think a flush and fill is in order before going to the trans shop. It was running warmer on the drive home, but it didn't over heat per se. On a side note, the fan does work.

I think I mentioned but the battery is marked 7/12 and it has a k & n in it.

Also, I think we will call it, project no payment.

Good thing the fan works. It went out on my dads. Not a cheap item to replace.

At 231k I wonder what's been replaced and whats stock...

I was bummed before we went that I wasn't going to be able to get any range time in this weekend. Then I found almost 50 bucks at the Royals game Sat night. So after I did my buddys brakes and purge solenoid today we went to the range and ran through 199 rounds. I had one failure to fire out of the 2 100ct boxes of winchester. I've ran about 600rds through the M&P and really liking how well everything is wearing in on it.

It could be air in the system or it could be a blown headgasket. Id start with a flush and fill if it looks nasty and go from there.

In the past when I have dealt with blown head gaskets the oil was frothy and the vehicle was blowing white smoke out of the tailpipe.

I checked the oil. It does not appear to be frothy and doesn't appear to be brand new...it definitely needs changed. I also followed Chaz as he drove it across town for me. There was nothing that came out of the tailpipe. So I'm hopeful a flush will fix...will do that this week.

Also I could smell antifreeze when it was running...but I didn't see any on the ground or anywhere.

I'll have to do some more checking when I flush it.

I want to flush it and get it to the trans shop this week.

Mac, I'd say for $600, you did pretty well regardless of mechanical issues. That thing looks nice!

Considering all the details you've talked about, I'd say you have a coolant issue that will need addressing. You said the coolant is nasty. Not likely someone just replaced any components and topped it off. I'd look for leaks everywhere. Especially the heads and water pump. I don't know a boat load about those 5.9s, but this stuff is common sense. Pay attention to see if it smokes. 200K+...it wouldn't be a shocker if it sent at least a puff out the back when you fired it up. But that would likely be rings and not *need* immediate attention. Blue smoke for oil, white for coolant. If no smoke, fix the cooling issue and run it.

Just my .02 there.

edit: Advance Auto (or someone you know) should have a cooling system pressure tester. Probably the easiest way to go about it if you don't see anything obvious.

5.9s are known for the intake plenum to leak. Check your heater core also, could be why you are smelling it while driving.

Bells and whistles are nice, when they work. My Limited has about 75% functionality on doo-dads.

It doesn't smoke at all.

Where is the intake plenum gasket? Is that part of the intake gasket on the top or something different? I know that those intake gaskets were known to go out. A lot of them were replaced before 100k miles. My buddy's wife's 5.9 had one done early one and its not been needed to be replaced since.

My guess is that in 231k there's been some parts replaced along the way...just wish I knew which ones.

Also, the only gadget that I have found to not work is the passenger's side seat heater, the rear wiper has issues, and the rear drivers window needs a motor or something cause the window doesn't stay up.

The intake plenum gasket is the gasket that seals the thin sheetmetal cover over the hole on the underside of the intake manifold where it covers the lifter valley. The plenum cover is thin stamped sheetmetal from the factory so the gasket likes to sag out and suck up oily air from the crankcase, they blow out often and there is an aftermarket kit out there that stiffens up or replaces the stock cover so that the gasket doesn't pop out or lose seal anymore. Iirc the kit including all needed gaskets is 140 or so.
