Important

Personally I think people remembering this event by posting pics and videos of that day is great. I was soooooo pissed when the major networks decided to quit showing photos and videos of the towers coming down.

For a few weeks after that event we were actually one, undivided nation. Everyone was on the same side. We were mad, hurt, shocked and we all wanted revenge. It wasn't long before the more "sensitive" types wanted to forget. They wanted to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it never happened at all. To me that attitude was almost as much of a tragedy as all the lives that were lost that day.

IMO even though it was eleven years ago today we should still be just as pissed, shocked and hurt as we were the day it happened. Vigilance might keep it from happening again.

Personally I was relieved when I didn't have to see those towers being hit all day long. You see, I worked in a TV and Appliance shop. Every TV, no exception was tuned in to CNN, NBC, CBS, etc. ALL Day long, and most of the Next Day, heck, all that weak. Tower 1 hit, Tower 2 hit, Pentagon hit, Flight that went down in the field. Absolutely no escape. All tragic News, all day long gave this Jeep enthusiast PTSD. I can't even watch an old movie with the towers in it without thinking of that day. I would, just F'n once, go though a 9/11 and NOT have any Towers crash, Flags fly at 1/2 mast, Politicians make stupid speeches on how it will never happen again, or see another post on the subject. But I know that's not going to happen...sigh.

<RANT>The real tragedy of 9/11 was not just the Towers and the thousands of innocent workers, and 1st responders who were killed or injured that day.
It is that we allowed our Government to take away our liberties in the name of "Security". We allowed Government to base policy on an exception, not the rule.

I don't know if a lot of folks realize this, but in the early morning hours of 9/12 we lost Meigs Field in Chicago. No, it was not "Terrorists", but the Mayor of Chicago "ensuring our safety" by taking bulldozers and carving a big "X" in the runway. Because of that day, we generated another agency with farther reaching powers than even the CIA "For our safety". Post 9/11 the sales of security cameras has skyrocketed. Same with Security system of all types. You can't even pick your nose without it being on some camera somewhere. Internet spying, yep that happens too. Wiretapping, we don't need no stink'n warrant!

Since 9/11Defense spending has skyrocketed, and exploration in Space, which actually has tangible benefits, has been cut.

Some think that loosing a few freedoms to ensure everyone's safety is an awesome idea. That's an interesting idea, but there will always be those with a demented purpose who want to take it out on their fellow humans. You can't plan for the wild hair up your azz, or someone else's wild hair. And unless we want to become Britain were walking down the street is monitored by the Police and that even owning a gun is a jail-able offense, we better start voting better.</RANT>

Sooo, after all that.

Thank You to the 1st Responders for their sacrifice that day. Remember those who are still paying for it though poor health.

Thank You to all the Soldiers who have fought and sacrificed all they had in this world so that we could sleep better.

For once I completely agree with you, Ron.

The TSA serves no purpose, and is the largest bureaucracy in our government. It has gotten very good at intruding on our lives, freedoms, and even private parts... for what? Every single time they've implemented a new intrusive search, it's been in reaction to an attack vector almost working. That's called closing the barn door after the cows have already run out.

approx. 3000 people died in the 9/11 attacks. Nearly 42000 people died in the year 2000 due to motor vehicle accidents. None of those 3000 deserved it, to be sure, but most of those 42000 probably didn't either.

I'm not saying we should have ignored it and moved on. We should have finished bin laden off, made it completely obvious that attacking the USA would be met with swift death at the business end of a cruise missile or laser guided bomb, and then gone back to putting NYC and the Pentagon back together.

You know what? I'll take my chances when it comes to terrorist attacks, without the TSA's help. We need intelligent security, if anything - the israelis are pretty damn good at it I hear, they go about it in a smart way instead of going through the motions of security theatre. Like I said, statistically speaking you are over 14 times more likely to die in an auto accident than 9/11 (and that's gone up since - because no terrorist will ever try to use a plane as a guided missile again, while there are still plenty of retard drivers on the road...) and I dare say driving lifted SUVs and pickups around offroad somewhat increases that risk.

I should also note that it is a damn good thing that only dumb people want to cause this country harm - most hackers/security minded people I know instinctually consider the weaknesses of any given security system whether or not they want to exploit them, for instance Nate's comment about the laptop batteries (brought up years ago on the popular webcomic XKCD, and common knowledge among nerds for years prior to that, even.) If the terrorists were smart, they'd have already succeeded many more times than they have, but then again, if they were smart, they probably wouldn't be looking to fly airliners into buildings.

I say abolish the TSA, require passengers on airlines to carry asp batons (put em under the seat with the life preserver), arm the pilot/copilot and keep the federal air marshal program around... problem solved. Not that anyone will ever try to hijack a plane and fly it into a building again, now that passengers are aware of what can happen, they don't tend to react very well to a hijacker, as the shoe bomber and underwear bomber found out.

Good security uses heuristics and behavioral analysis, not random searching, checklists of certain things you are or are not allowed to bring onto certain modes of transport, and being given a Freedom Grope or letting someone look through your clothes before getting on a plane. You'll detect far more terrorists by asking them questions (where are you going? what are you going to do there?) and seeing how they behave while answering the question than you will by saying "well they took their shoes off and we felt their balls, so clearly they aren't a shoe bomber or an underwear bomber... carry on!"

So another Jeep WTF...

Take a look at the 2013 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk....

A capable Minivan? Yes

I love the new Grands. If I had a crap load of money and wanted a lux suv it would be the only one I'd own. In SRT-8 trim....with twin turbos.

Today is 9/12. Or 3/4. Or 18/24.

Those numbers are just as important as yesterday's numbers. It's about loving your country 365 days a year, not just when the cameras are turned on.

I've been working here for 6 years, and I have not yet had to take that test, with the exception of my dot physicals.

when I was younger, I quit smoking because it would put me to sleep. Now that I need something to help me sleep I can't smoke.

It had been a few years since my name had been drawn. I'll probably get it next month too. It seems that they get me every few years, but then they get me two or three months in a row.

wow...working hard two days...you miss a lot. yesterday i was working downtown, and when i say down town...i mean when i turned around this is what i saw behind me...

0911122022.jpg

what you see are the traditional two towers of light projected in new york city to represent the two towers every year on sept 11th. my wife and i moved to nyc on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 to the day...and i was there last year for the 10th anniversary. of the last 6 years, i've been in new york city 5 times on september 11th. yesterday was the first day i mustered up enough courage to go down there on the day. i've been there plenty of times. in fact, the path train to nj used to drive through the big hole that used to be where the two towers once stood. yesterday i can truly say, it felt different. it was about 8pm on a break from work and everyone walking around the site was quiet, men in full uniform from all branches of military, police, fire fighters etc were standing around...sights like this were everywhere...

as i walked around i couldn't help but feel my heart swell up a bit...at one point i stopped and stared up at the freedom tower, illuminated in red, white and blue with a huge flag at the base

for a moment i got a little choked up...it was really overwhelming, not because i have any sort of personal connection to the attack, but a lot did change on that day. i hear where both sides are coming from. its sad to me that some people only get patriotic when reminded of such a great tragedy, but there is also no denying how we were all effected. i don't know what made me decide to finally go down there yesterday, but i'm glad i did...even if no one was speaking, i knew exactly how everyone felt.

next year i will probably be here again on 9/11...im not sure if i will go back down there or not. it was a very odd experience, but im very glad i did.
