Had the opportunity yesterday to get out to Chrysler's Chelsea Proving Grounds for an Intern Ride and Drive.
They had about 25 vehicles in a parking lot set for all the interns to take out and drive around one of their test roads. They had anything from Town & Country's to GC's, Durango's, 200 Converts., 300, Challenger SRTs, Chargers, Fiat 500s, and Fiat Abarth, Ram 1500s, etc. I got to take out the Abarth, which is tiny yet somewhat peppy for a tiny motor. The 5 speed was fun too. I also drove the Durango Citadel AWD which has a third row. It rode very nice.
They also had the opportunity to ride with SRT Drivers in a Viper, SRT Grand Cherokee, SRT Charger, and SRT 300.
I rode in the GC which has the 6.4L Hemi. It was amazing, hugged the corners like a dream. It downpoured on the handling track, the GC was catching the Viper around the track.
In the 300 and Charger we had the opportunity to ride around the track at around 130 mph. Banking in the turns was similar to that at Daytona.
Finally, they had 3 Wrangler Rubicon's to take around the trail. I had the opportunity to drive one. And for something rolling straight off the assembly line to the trail, it could handle plenty. I did feel bad for the poor wranglers because some of the interns did understand the use of four-low and were driving them down the pavement at 40mph in 4 lo not understanding why it wouldnt shift right.
Overall it was a great experience and if anyone gets a chance to attend a Ride and Drive I highly recommend it.
