Important

It will go into the winterfest parts pile to bring along. Keep me posted if you find something else before then or find a way to get this one.

I have tech questions that might show my newbieness

so this weekend im going to check out this 85 2dr xj that apparently has a new 4.0, 4 barrel motor, that is not yet finished("needs a few odds and ends")

the 4.0, 4 barrel motor part is what is confusing me. is this possible? or is this guy also confused.

Remember this was nearly 11 years ago. I was broke, barely making any money and just wanted to go wheelin! I has just rolled it three months before that photo, I was lucky to have it back on the road. I couldn't afford a trailer. The exploder was my parents. My 2nd rig was the bronco in the background that I eventually did buy a trailer and tow with rather cheaply for a while. I towed the 95 Xj with a 79 ford bronco to Branson, mo for camp jeep in 2002. Was safer than the exploder, but wasn't perfect.

This was arriving home after the trip to MO.

Nice 4000th post...

My roommate has a 79 Bronco and I think it's spent more time on my trailer than it has on the road, I can't even imagine towing another vehicle with it. I'm guessing yours must have been in a little better shape though. Get any kind of decent mileage towing with that thing?

84/85 had the GM v6. Which has a carb. Oh, and the motors are junk.

IIRC, 1985 XJs never came with a 4.0l I6. Some serious firewall work is necessary to stuff one in.

Secondly, 4.0l I6 engines have always been fuel injected. YJ 4.2 I6 engines were carb'ed, though.

Personally, I've got no interest in going back to a carbed engine. This one sounds like a hack job.

ok thanks. still going to check it out. one reason.....FLOORS. his story: dad was building a xj to be a show stopper crawler. built a completely new motor that i guess is go fast beefed up. dad passed away and didn't really finish. son wants to sell it to me for cheap. claims there is not a spot of rust on it and he has many new and used parts to go with it.

rew and i call it the unicorn. you will see why soon enough.

so your telling me that if this thing is a turd4 banger, i wouldn't easily be able to put the 4.0 out of my current 95xj in it?

also, so this 4.2 came in the yj...has anyone heard of throwing a 4.2 in an xj? maybe thats what it has.

In 1988, when the 4.0l I6 started availability in the XJ, the firewall was moved back substantially. Swapping in a 4.0l in place of the 2.5l since 1988 hasn't been a firewall problem.

I'd be surprised if the 4.2l swap has never happened into an XJ. I know that parts of it are common, use a 4.2 crank in the bottom of a 4.0l for a stroker motor.

Surprisingly Dad and I rebuilt the 351m motor in the Bronco and it ran great. I had a former friend rebuild the carb, which caused lots of problems, I ended up buying a new carb for it and putting an electric fuel pump on it, it ran great. Finally once I had too many projects and had a better tow rig I sold it a few years ago.

We had over 40k trouble free miles on the motor after the rebuild. I put a cam in it and it pulled pretty well.

Didn't even know that was my 4000th post...

furthered my investigation

owner says it has a 258(4.2) motor with a 4.0 head.

whatcha guys think. would this thing be pretty nice? were the 4.2s decent?

Yeesh. It's still carbureted, right? Me, I'd walk away from it.

VERY VERY JUNK! :puke: The 2.5 has more HP and no I'm not kidding. some had that, I'd go with the 4 banger any day.

Another option you have with these years is the 4.3L V6 out of a blazer jimmy etc. Personally I would walk away from it. Get something a bit more modern. Parts will be more accessible and cheaper.
