Important

Speaking of my brother's homebrew...I just popped the top on his Gridlock. This stuff is effing awesome! Kinda like a porter. I'm diggin it hardcore.

Technically speaking, a "Mr. Beer" will deliver a fermented beverage consisting of water, malt, hops and yeast. These are not known for being high quality kits.

Meh, that's what I used for a while before I stopped entirely. In a basic refill kit you get a can of HMU (Hops Malt Extract), a package of "Booster", and a package of yeast.

Nearest I can figure is that they took most of the work out of it for you.

You mix the HME (which is very very very high viscosity syrupy stuff) with water and bring to boil. Add the Booster. When dissolved, let cool. Pout the mix into the 2 gal fermentation "Keg". Add yeast. Put in room temp area out of direct sunlight and let it sit a couple of weeks. They say 1wk, but don't kid yourself, you'll have near beer if you do that. Bottle it with a hint of sugar in the bottle, and let it sit another 2-3 weeks at room temperature.

You can add things to the mix to change the flavor, or you can follow their recipe(s).

The result is fairly drinkable. Looking at abut 4-7% depending on how much sugar you add to the bottle. It was fun when I did it, and a low overhead way of getting into brewing as everything except the Keg will Xfer over as your largest cost is bottles and consumables.

Then I got an OC Membership and drink something different most every time I go there.

Mr beer might be the kit my wife told my mom I wanted.for XMas I don't know if they got it for me or not, iguess they sell it at bed bath and beyond over here.
Speaking of... My dad said he was looking for winches for me on the internet and all that came up was skimpy clothed girls :D I said " you might be able to pull that lie off with mom but your not fooling me I know you know what you were looking for"

If your kit is coming from BB&Y, it's either a Mr. Beer, or a close relative.

Ron, the MB pre-hopped ingredients are most of the problem. Part of brewing is knowing what and when to add it. At best, MB kits are bring to a boil, cool, add the yeast pack and ferment. Quite a number of brews that I make are 3 stage hop additions. While you can do that with an MB, it's going to be a good deal less effective.

Fermenter? I have not gotten my hands on an MB fermenter. I'd be concerned about niches and crevices where something undesirable can take up residence based on the pictures.

Part of the process involves cleansing the "Keg" and all of your instruments, pots, pans, and eventually bottles. They include a packet of "Cleanser" which does the trick most effectively.

When I say "Keg" it looks like a plastic "Keg". No real nooks or crannies.

Don't mistake my adding info to your post. I am not saying, nor have I ever said this makes the best damn beer ever ;) I just said it was "fairly drinkable" :D I didn't want to spend a lot of time learning the ins and outs of brewing, nor did I want to give myself food poisoning, and I didn't want to spend a lot getting into it. Mr Beer was a "Good" solution, for me anyways.

Someday I'll get it out of the closet and brew "something" again ;)

Going to the Bengals game today....Man,I hope they can beat the Texans today and continue winning to get in the play-offs..

check the cylinders with a bore scope again for sure... last thing you want is for that thing to barely make it past whatever warranty he's giving you and then crap out because the cylinder walls are already toast.

Got here to pick it up. Rocker arm fell off again while sitting in his shop over night. We've been waiting over 2 hours for them to 'fix' it again...

How does a rocker arm just fall off???

I can only imagine how nervous you are about how this thing is going to run two weeks from now.

good luck

Hindsight is 20/20. If I were to do it all over again I would pull the current motor and taken it to the local engine builder, spent the extra $500 or more from them, and put the same motor back in. I understand I could've done Jasper, never been a fan of them and they were over $1000 more. Could've, would've, should've, we are now a slave to what this cat will and won't do without it costing more money.

We we arrived I said, "So, does it purr like a kitten?" He said no. He said they ran it for 40 minutes after it was fixed and it ran great. He left it in the shop over night. He started it to move it outside for us and it had lost the same rocker arm (the number 7 piston, there were three that fell of initially number 2,3, and 7). He said his employing was pulling the valve cover. They pulled it, found the arm off and found a little damage to the lifter. So he put another lifter and rocker arm on it. Put it back together and now...its only got 10 psi of oil pressure...

He said he thought that the lifter might be bleeding out? That might cause the oil pressure to be low. I think that the fuel has got into the motor with three exhaust valves that weren't opening and possible washed the bearing out. Either way, Dad and I had to get back to work this afternoon and the guy said he needed to go to the hospital for his wife who was having some tests. We left it there.

I also had brought the core down. They have the core now, but have to inspect it before we get the money back for it...we'll see how long that takes...

While we were there two other people with problem motors came in and were trying to get him to fix them. Another person was there inquiring about having a 4.0 for an XJ built. When that guy left, I caught him in the parking lot and told him to stay away. He acted suprised. I gave him the 1 minute story on our dealings and he told me thanks.

I don't know how this guy can sleep at night with all the problems people have...

anyone here ever "share" storage/shop space with anyone? i have the chance to rent a garage space with pre fabbed shelves, a 8X14 storage room and an 8X12 work bench room...the guy wants $200 a month for the whole thing. its insulated and wired, but not heated. i think my wife would have a cow at first, but i can easily make the money back each month doing work out of the shop. would get all of my projects out of the garage too....i just want someone i know to give $50 a month to share the shelves and the extra storage room....
