anyone here ever "share" storage/shop space with anyone? i have the chance to rent a garage space with pre fabbed shelves, a 8X14 storage room and an 8X12 work bench room...the guy wants $200 a month for the whole thing. its insulated and wired, but not heated. i think my wife would have a cow at first, but i can easily make the money back each month doing work out of the shop. would get all of my projects out of the garage too....i just want someone i know to give $50 a month to share the shelves and the extra storage room....

A friend of mine and I were looking for something similar around Lafayette, we found a couple larger buildings that we would be the sole tenants of. One for $600/mo+utils, and another for $400/mo+utils but it was in a sketchy part of town and I didn't want to leave anything nice there. How big is this garage space? I would have gladly paid $200/mo for an extra 2-car garage, but could never find one.

Heat shouldn't be a problem, get a kerosene salamander and run it for a bit when you show up, that ought to keep it warm for a few hours at a time. Be careful about justifying it to yourself as a place to do side projects for money. You're probably more motivated than me, but when I finally did rent a pole barn for a while it quickly filled up with my own projects, and I had neither the time or space to work on anything else. Think of it as taking $200/mo away from parts money for the Jeep, or other entertainment/hobby expenses. Instead of seeing a movie, go spend a few hours at the shop instead. Just look at it as $200 that's going away with no return, if you can afford to do that for a few months (or however long a lease is), I'd say give it a shot and see how it works out.

Coincidentally, after my whole search I ended up buying a different house with a lot of land, but now I don't have the money to build a shop... so in retrospect I would have been better off renting some shop space but couldn't find what I wanted. I'd say go for it while you have the chance!

i work all freelance, so i am home for days, sometimes weeks...my problem is that when i start a project i have to either clean out my garage or move everything around to do it. i could leave my tools there and just pull whatever in i was working on in the shop...i also have been repairing outboards and building some little electronic toys for people (hunting products) and it is a tax write off for me. it has a 220 welder hookup and a spot for a compressor. just got word that the guy would do it for $150 if i split the electric with my buddy who rents the rest of the building. for the amount we use the electric it would probably be less than $25 a month most months until i ran a compressor or welder in there. its a 3 minute car ride and a 10 minute walk from my house and my buddy occupys the rest of the building...

oh and he has 3 kerosene heaters that sit in his shop right next door, so i wouldn't even have to buy one

Sounds like you have your answer! It's good you know the people involved, that makes it a little less risky on your part. If you need another justification, look at it just from the standpoint of storage and see what storage units cost in your area. I paid $25/mo to store my trailer and Jeep, outside. Indoor 10x20 units were around $100/mo I think. You're getting quite a bit more than that for not much more money, *and* you have electric and can work out of it. It seems like a chunk of change on paper, but even if you're just making a little bit of money on side projects, what you have left to pay that's all on you still isn't very much for what you're getting. Having 220V hookups is a huge bonus too.

I can't wait to get all of my tools and crap out of the house garage so I can actually park inside again, which I haven't been able to do for years. If your wife is currently parking her car outside, you should be able to sell this to her pretty easy with winter approaching. :)

I became unemployed as of 6pm today. I become reemployed at 7am tomorrow. My dealership got bought out and went final today. From what I've heard the new owner is a guy that will either make you a ton of money or burn the place to the ground. I'm now causally looking for a job. If I hear of something promising I'll entertain the thought but not really look for one.

I taught my kid how to clap tonight! Pretty awesome feeling.
Man, I really can't wait for stuff like that. For now our milestones are centered around him laughing, giving kisses and eating real baby food. The laughing and kisses are pretty fawking sweet!

Koopers not really into kisses. He has been "feeding" himself. crawling up on stuff, and yelling/jibber jabbering all the time. It seems each stage is more fun.

Koopers 9 months, how old is your boy?

I did it for about a year. With a buddy and two 'friends of a friend' kinda deal. It was an old 4 bay service center. The building was in good shape, it was heated and wired, the air was still there and the lifts were.

At first it worked out fine, everyone kept there business to themselves. It was also kinda nice to have someone to yack with when you took a break.

After awhile it became a mess. I left my tool boxes unlocked one time. I found a bunch of my tools in one of the other parts of the building, the guy using that section said.. "I was working on something I'm getting paid for and needed your stuff'. I packed my shit up and moved out that day...

It keeps getting better. The first time shooting & hunting. The first time they drive your Jeep. The first time the cops show up at the front door. Better all the time.

Look at the bright side...you are getting to spend some quality time with your dad.
