Important

Actually no.

It was a really good idea.

Back in my Jamboree days I had a chance to speak with one of the engineers that built the XJ. The bolt is there because it is the hardest to get to, and they wanted a bolt that you could get a socket on without seeing it, and know it was on square and would not slip.

Mine are still there for that reason.

Mine are too, but it's because I didn't have any suitably sized 3/8-16 hardened bolts when I got to putting it back together. It was 9pm, I was completely soaked in transmission fluid, coolant, fuel, and oil, and it was pouring rain (so anything that wasn't soaked with some oil base was soaked with water and mud.) No stores were open so I tossed it back together and put the drivetrain back in.

Honestly, now that I have the socket, I don't really care either way. I can do a CPS in 10 minutes sitting on the side of the road with my usual toolkit, so that's not really a big deal either.

I got the 5" turbo back exhaust (muffler delete) installed and welded up this morning. Holly crap is it loud. I'm all for loud roaring exhausts but this thing is insane.
You should hear an old military truck :D The only muffler I have is the turbo itself, and the exhaust dumps a foot or two above the (vinyl) roof by the passenger door. There is a warning plate on the dash saying that hearing protection is REQUIRED to operate the vehicle, and it is right. On the 7 hour drive from Pittsburgh to Rausch Creek one of my earplugs wasn't in quite right and my hearing in that ear was muffled for days.

That's funny, I just got my 4" stainless turbo back kit in today at work. Guess what I'm doing after lunch :D

I have a 3" straight pipe now, it will be getting a muffler with the 4". Tends to drone at highway cruising RPMs with a trailer.

Iwish I knew what my new truck sounded like....it is still sitting dead at the office...gonna have it towed off today....f'n thing.

I am strokin' again..woot woot!!

It ended up being the starter was the end result. I am still not sure why it ended that way, but for $208 I am back up and running. I am bringing it to the shop in a week or two and going to have them put all new glow plugs and GP relays in it to have that covered.

just from a quick measurement I am afraid my slide in camper is not going to work on teh new truck w/o some modifications. The jacks are not tall enough and I am afraid they will not clear the tires. So I need to make the brackets to sit out another few inches each side and add about 6" of height adjustment to them to be able to back the truck under it. All in all, 1.5 months to WF and it is cold as hell out and I can not fit it in the shop...probably the haunted hotel again this year.....

I bought a set of extending tow mirrors from truckchamp.com, "direct bolt on replacement".
They arrived yesterday, an hour and a half to do the drivers side, the wires were too short, the plug was different, and the wires were different colors, other than that they were "direct bolt on replacement".
I did the driver's side yesterday afternoon, this morning, I brought the pass side into the house, cut the plug, extended the wires, identified which was which and went out into the cold garage to take the old mirror off.
ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY SENT ME TWO DRIVER'S SIDE MIRRORS!!!
Now, of course, they wont take it back, and I am stuck with my door all taken apart!

<edited>
Well upon calling back, now they will take the mirror back ,and send me a new one, -10% restocking fee.
I can not complain about that.....
