(yes, I am kidding.)

Personally I'm a FreeBSD fanatic. It even runs fairly well on large Itanium systems... I keep telling the guys here we should do more testing with it, but everyone is either working on linux, HPUX (I know, ewww), or Windows.

freebsd is the hawtness for specialized machines, but I feel Linux has the edge in configuration with hardware. HPUX is teh debil, I'd like whomever came up with the CLI for that to burn in hell.

Dan, sucks to hear about the woman troubles. Come down this way, we'll get XXXXerd up and go waste mounds of ammunition. You can pet my wieners too.

Went and looked at the pole-barn house I was talking about. Most of the rooms are smaller. I've still got a few doubts but overall I think it's the cheapest way to get what I want. And it sounds like the guy will rent it to me while I get my house sold, which definitely helps the process.

In the meantime, went out to start the truck and the starter is finally shot. In the process of pulling it out, the stud for the hot lead actually broke off of the solenoid, and then while removing the broken stud from the lug on the battery cable, it was so corroded that it bent in half. So I'm waiting on the oh-so-cheap one-piece cable that connects both batteries, the starter, and the rest of the truck. Never a dull moment.

bump that, make your own. I prefer to use the pre cut lenghts of cable with the lugs on them, then just use brass hardware to tie it all together and some big heatshrink tubing to protect the connections. That way you can always replace just a section instead of the whole thing.

Yup. My local Advance carries bulk 2 gauge cable and the terminal lugs. Much cheaper and you can upgrade at the same time. Use your stocker to get a rough measurement and go from there.

I considered that, and I may still do that. I believe the stock wiring is 2 gauge from one battery to the other and 0 gauge from there to the starter. It's hefty.

I guess I could get some nice brass top-post terminals and the pre-crimped cables. It's kind of important for it to be done right so I'd be afraid to attempt to crimp them myself, without a ratcheting or hydraulic crimper.

It would certainly make it easier to change part of it in the future. I don't know if I would need top-post terminals with fairly large screws to make sure that isn't the weakest link? 0-gauge wire is pretty beefy.

I have a nice big crimper made for that big of wire, too bad you don't live closer...

You can take some channel locks (either something with a good warranty or some you just don't like) with a 4 foot pipe over each handle, that usually gets it crimped down pretty good.

If you're still not comfortable with it, take a small torch and run a bunch of solder down in there, just be careful not to heat it up too much or for too long, or you'll melt too much insulation. It'll make a better connection anyway and you won't have to worry about corrosion as much.

Both are a bad idea for anything other than a temporary fix.

Is there an auto electric shop up there? Mac's here in C'ville put Deka brass marine terminals and crimped new eyes on my cables for $10 out the door. I couldn't have bought the terminals alone for that.

Another alternative- DelCity and other supply houses sell terminals and lugs you solder on with a torch (and all the flux, heatshrink tube, and cable you might need). I thought about going that route, but it was going to set me back a week and more money.

So, the neighbor's college freshman son drives a 93 Grand. The exhaust corroded into bits behind the cat. No big deal, get a muffler and a new tailpipe.

Except....

He let one of his buddy's brothers work on it. Ohmygawd....... after looking it over this afternoon (he called me when the muffler came loose from the cat again,) I told him just don't introduce me to the bozo who did this.

He ended up with the wrong muffler. Inlet is too small, so it doesn't make a good seal with the cat. Outlet is too big (no, it's not installed backwards, it's just the wrong muffler,) so it has a crummy joint with the tailpipe. Both sides are double-clamped. The muffler outlet has been hacked to try and make the seal (it failed.) The tailpipe is between the swaybar and the axle, so the tailpipe just doesn't go high enough. As a result of that, the kid hacked off the tailpipe hanger and tied it up with quarter inch rope.

Some peope just shouldn't be allowed to have wrenches.

:roflmao: That's hilarious, I bet whoever did it drives a very safe vehicle!

Today we cleaned out the garage for the first time since I moved in..........geez we have a lot of parts between the two of us.

You're exactly right. If it was my Jeep, it would be one thing. My truck is my DD as well as my long distance vehicle, I can't afford to have something like cheaping out on wiring leave me stranded.

but it was going to set me back a week and more money.

Yep... I am on borrowed time driving this failing-slave-cylinder Toyota Tercel around, and I need to get my truck back. It's bad enough I have to wait till Tuesday for the cable. I do have to say that DelCity setup looks pretty sweet. I might be relocating the battery on the Jeep and if the price is right I'd consider something like that. Thanks for the link!

is anyone participating in no shave november?

No Shave November is what got me to finally start growing a beard a few years ago. Of course this year I feel like I'd just be continuing no-shave October, so it won't take much work to get prepared.

Also, barring any unforeseen circumstances, I will begin renting a pole-barn house in a month or so, putting my house up for sale, and then buying said pole-barn. I might regret doing this, but if I don't then I will probably regret not doing it.

My jeeps my DD, long distance vehicle, and offroader. I've been running at least 8 cable ends done like this in my jeep (three 2 gauge wires, one 4 guage) for a long time without any issue, I'll let you know if I ever have a problem. I really don't see how crimped AND soldered ends are a bad idea

Almost done with my compressor setup, just have to find and order a check valve and 150 psi safety valve, I can't find them locally, and then mount the tank up in the trunk

is anyone participating in no shave november?

The military doesn't approve of the idea

always...sets me up for my WF beard. Where is the smiley w/ a beard when ya need one?? :D

I've never actually done it, the longest I've gone is maybe a week and a half. But a whole month will be new. My birthday is on the last day of the month so I suppose I could see how long it gets by then.

I cant do the neck beard thing, so i will be shaving
