Nothing is going to stop that winch line from whipping if it separates. The line weights direct it downward into the ground where it will lose a lot of energy rather quickly. If you can keep the line down, and out of the air where nothing will slow it down, you're ahead of the game.
I've got a commercial winch weight bag. It's just a couple of sewn heavyweight nylon bags with a couple of pounds of sand that drapes over the line, secured with hook-n-loop fasteners (Velcro(R) type stuff.)
