Important

Nothing is going to stop that winch line from whipping if it separates. The line weights direct it downward into the ground where it will lose a lot of energy rather quickly. If you can keep the line down, and out of the air where nothing will slow it down, you're ahead of the game.

I've got a commercial winch weight bag. It's just a couple of sewn heavyweight nylon bags with a couple of pounds of sand that drapes over the line, secured with hook-n-loop fasteners (Velcro(R) type stuff.)

It is not necessarily intended to "stop" the cable as much as have a downward force on it incase of breakage to pull the line down instead of it flying through the air. I use one of my heavier snatch straps wrapped over/around the line. Luckily I have not had a winch line break yet. Funny as it sounds, I have seen people use a long tube sock with weights in it and a knot tied in it. They drape it over the winch line in case of berakage. Last time I saw a winch line break as last summer on the Tri-State Run and it had a strap over it and it seemed to do the job at hand, it had enough weight to it that it pulled the line to the ground and it did not send the cable back through the guys windshield and no one was cut in half.

EDIT: Yeah, what Jeff said...I was typing my reply when he posted up. :D

Classes of License:
The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:
Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

As you are a race team that is for profit, even if you are not for hire, you may indeed need a CDL Class A. Being "Not for Hire" does not exempt you from the CDL requirement.

I've pretty much known that anything over 26,001 is a cdl...

I've never weighed myself to see those numbers, so this is a new one to me :)

As of now, doing the speed limit and keeping things in a position were we are relatively "low key" ...ie enclosed has no writing on it, and not making ourself a target we'll probably keep things as they are. If we get hemmed up in something then you can all say you told us so...we are still safe and with in the manufacture's numbers of weights going down the road.

oh and for winch weights, i've used tshirts, floor mats, jackets, anything that will add just a little bit of weight to direct it to the ground...i even use it on the winch rope...

mac 'not a big dumb and scary load' gyvr

Seen a guy at Redbird once that had a couple of baseballs in a heavytube sock.........that was his winch cable weight. He just walked up to the line once it was taunt, grabbed one ball and slung the other over the line with enough force that it wrapped itself around the cable several times.

Drunken calls were not made due to the fact that we had 3G coverage at the campground and were watching "educational" videos.

:D

Rev
I just got a visual of the campfire...

And threw up in my mouth a little.

I bet is was some of Josh's "home video's" that he taped over the last couple of weeks, that were hosted on a remote server.

If so, if that fact would have been advertised, I would have stayed.:D

I'm flattered that you would watch one of my "home videos" but that wasn't the case. These were production quality "educational" films. I guess the key grip crew is one app my snozberry doesn't come with...
