So far every vehicle I've done has been leaking at the service ports. If you go to a shop they pull down a vacuum and say "well it held vacuum, system doesn't leak" because the service ports don't leak while something is connected to them :doh:

Yea that's what motivated me to start doing it myself. I bought a gauge set and vac pump and I replace valve cores and drier on everything now before I recharge.
I'm at the same point with wheel alignments, can't find a shop that's really motivated to do a good job so I'll start doing those myself too.

Heading back from vacation...hung out with Dylan and my fam about every day. Went for an almost seven mile hike yesterday and about did my wife in...hopefully will get back in time to work on j5 when I get home before leaving tomorrow. Is there a cheap vacuum pump that'll do an acceptable job for A/C work?

There are venturi vacuum pumps like this around $20 (http://www.harborfreight.com/air-vacuum-pump-with-r134a-and-r12-connectors-96677.html) that you connect to compressed air and then they pull a vacuum. Some people say they can't pull enough vacuum, but it's certainly better than not doing a vacuum at all and trying to charge with a bunch of moisture in the system.
A conventional standalone vacuum pump does a better job but they run anywhere from $100 at Harbor Freight up to anywhere from $300-$1000 for a new Robinair or Yellow Jacket pump.
I lucked out and found a very old Robinair pump on craigslist for $35. Lots of times you can find shops that are closing or moving and selling off old equipment or just guys who used to DIY but don't want to deal with it anymore. Search for "vaccuum" and "vaccum" too, you never know how people will spell it.
