Important

:twak: Gonna be a bad day at work, lost 3 out of 6 chillers for the data center.

Heh..... Rev, the data center here has over 100 Unix servers and the assorted odd lot of Windoze servers (I can't count that high.) AND it does not have an external wall or windows, it's in the interior of the top floor here. Besides, while I do keep the Unix machines up, environment (power and cooling) are outside my little department.

The chillers are in the process of being replaced, the crane showed up on Tuesday night, and was hoisting equipment all day yesterday to the roof.

Several weeks ago, when the chiller issues really came to light, I was sitting at a console in the middle of the Unix area when one of the chillers failed. The temperature rose 20 degrees in less than 20 minutes.

There are already a couple of it's little brothers in the data center.

Unfortunately, I've got problems with this kind of appliance. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding how it works, it provides a blast of chilled air out one side (or port,) and a hot blast out the other. I need whole room, not spot, and using these things only adds the heat load of another couple of motors and compressors. If I park this guy in front of a server rack, that rack gets a nice refreshing breeze, while anything behind the appliance gets even hotter.

true, you need some venting provisions so you can vent it's exhaust to the exterior.

The large white tubes carry the hot air away.

So, you're set up to vent externally? Unfortunately, I don't have that capability.

External venting should have been part of your facilities plan.....as that is not your area on responsability I will digress.

That was one thing I did real well in my old job was plan for "oh shit" times.

Still glad I donlt have to worry about that place anymore.

I saw you today riding around in your flexy fork lift.
I was going to flag you down but yo disappeared into a building.
I would have peed on your junk but there were too many people around.
So I ate the buffet at the river boat....
MMMMMM!

And people wonder why airplane seats don't bother me....
They didn't hire me one bit of summer help, so now I get to run my ass off.
Pee on it, I hate the goddamn thing right now.
The buffet is much better since the cult no longer owns the boat.

See you at the parade Monday.

Rev, there are a whole raft of things about the data center that just plain suck. It's also a 30 year old room, used to be home to Eyetalian Boat Mechanics heavy iron. We're short on power, and A/C, more than a general plan, and running cables is not pleasant at the best of times.

I'm doing fairly well at getting the D/C manager to do his job by tossing cabling, power and cooling over the wall to him and telling him to deal with it. I do not want to run cable, or plug into power, that's his bailiwick. My co-workers have problems getting him to do things at least partially because he knows they'll just go ahead and do it anyway.

Been there.....usually takes one one "biggie" to have an attitude change. Of course, some you will never help.

Oh well.....my weekend starts at 4AM Friday, in Rockford, hope someone has his doors locked. :D
