Do those lab kits include debounce circuitry on the slide switches & push buttons, or do you need to implement that yourselves?

push buttons are all wired up. you see the chip in the lower right corner between the 2 switches? that one is set up for debouncing.

but we did have to learn to build the debouncer before we could use that
 
programing is a whole different class here.

we didnt have anything like this in thornhood

I do teach high school, I teach some PLTW [Project Lead the Way] classes, one of which is Digital Electronics.

We go through everything starting with 'What is an electron?' all the way up to building and programming Bo-bots and other projects. Its a year long class...
 
Wow, that's a blast from the past. I haven't really played with TTL in years...

Get some 74LS163As to play with, they're way cooler than 7493s.
