Important

Going in the morning to help a friend try to get a 01 Dakota out of park to get it down to the Dodge dealer to take care of a recall. It is on his used car lot and someone is interested in it. When I drove it to take pictures for craigslist, it worked fine. When someone came to look at it, it wouldn't shift out of park. Luckily it sounds like it is the recalled part. Hoping I can get it to come out of park and drive it to Dodge for him. If not, he will have to get a roll back for it. Then hopefully it will sell, for each car that sells that I list for him, I get a little money for it. I also get to use his garage and air tools for when I need to work on my Xj.

Brake switch bad causing brake interlock not to release?

If he calls a rollback they will have to drag it onto the bed unless they can pop the linkage off of the trans. Probably have to put it on the wheel lift backwards.

A good two truck operator will have wheeled dollies to rest the rear wheels of the vehicle on and be able to roll it right up the ramp.

a good operator will drag it forward until the rear wheels are just on the deck and then when he gets to the dealership, shake it off and pull out from underneath it.

Repo'ed many that way.

Ok, driving the monte into work today, I heard a squeel as it was just about to shift into OD. Then no OD.

The first 3 gears shift fine w no slipping.

What do you guys think? It has a 3800 in it.

Has T driven it recently?

seriously though, if it was something in the trans the OD light should flash. Belt slippage that dropped the voltage and freaked the solenoids? That's a really unlikely coincidence though.

Yep, impounded many that way myself. Dollies are way more of a pain than they're worth.

I need to look at the transfer case shifting, if it is like my XJ. Would I be able to put it in neutral and drag it backwards with my Jeep or something with my recovery strap?

If it needs towed and he doesn't have a company he likes to use, I will see if my insurance guy's company can do it.

You should be able to get the t'case in neutral whether it is manual or electric shift. May have to consult the manual if it's electric shift but it can be done. Then it will roll without problem (keep your foot on the brake!)

Just called, it came out of gear and he is taking it down there right now. One less trip into town now. Charging my impact driver so I can keep it in my XJ just case I run into problems or see someone who needs help.

Just wish the gnomes that took my floor jack handle and now my car dock for my phone would return them.

in my research every monte carlo eventually needs trans work. i believe i may have informed you of this when you got it. mine is at the shop right now getting overhauled.

i do believe that the throw a check engine code so you might want to check. i am on a monte forum and pretty much around 125k to 150k miles they all blow.
:repair:

Same transmission that is my moms van. It has 110k and the transmission had a hard shift between two gears (3rd and 4th I think) until around November when it wouldn't even shift out of first.

Does it have fluid in it?

Seriously I've had them do this when they run low...maybe you sprung a leak on the way into work...

mac 'should've kept the baby XJ' gyvr

Yep, fluid is okay

Research tells me one of two things, one the torque converter clutch solenoid is bad, or the 4th gear/OD shaft is stripped.

The first is $200/$300

The second is $1300/$1600

I'm dropping it off on my way home for a free diagnosis.

If its over $1000 I may look into a junk yard tranny, which I don't want cuz it may be junk.
