Important

I'm still trying to figure out why anybody would lift a tow rig. That seems to be to sort of defeat the purpose.

Having said that, in 2004, when I rode out to NACFest, Beezil towed his pile out on a steel trailer behind a Durango. I don't remember what engine, but he did have a good sway control WD hitch. No problems, IIRC.

I have recently decided to keep my durango due to the fact that trade in value is 1000 bux on a truck i spent 16k on and the last 9 years modding and taking care of...anyways when the time comes that i can afford a trailer this would be my tow rig. should work well enough right...im no tow expert that's why i ask so you tell me
99 durango 5.9l 4x4 lifted 5 in. (35in tires and 4:56 gears<----coming soon)

Durango makes for a good tow rig. Beezil used one for many years before he became gay and left us.

edit: the 5" would be a bit if concern.

I lifted the d 6 years ago, it was my dd/show/sometimes wheel truck for many years. now that i can barely afford to drive it(10mpgs) but it not wroth enough to trade in im thinking it will be a tow rig. i brought it out wheeling a few times but with the IFS i came home with all kinds of broke parts.

still a great truck and it is the only vehicle i own that i could count on enough to get me to and from elk rapids MI. early last month.

like i said just cant swallow accepting 1k for it so it will sit in my drive way until...

just ordered the 35s and i know ill have to go from 3:92s to 4:56s when they are all on.
but since we are on the topic of towing. is there a big deal in the drum brakes over the disk? there is a rear disk conversion that i may look into if it will overall help my towing someday.

you can get the pre 00 'hoe's for cheap. the earlier ones have rear leaf springs? I know my 93 Sub had leaves, not that towing with my 02 hoe with rear coils has ever been an issue. the earlier ones had the 5.7 vs 5.3, both great engines. I still wish i would have got another sub, however the hoe does fit better in the garage.

Yep, all the old body style Chevy SUVs are leaf sprung. Mine sagged quite a bit with the tongue weight. I threw a set of Ride-Rites on mine and put them up to about 20psi when towing, that fixed the sag problem. As for the motors, I convinced myself the 5.7 would be a rock solid motor, then a week after I bought it I spun two rod bearings in it. I think that has more to do with my car-buying luck and less with the engine though... with your Monte I'm sure you can relate.

Especially if the reasoning is that the owner got tired of driving their lifted Jeep around because it rides, handles and steers like crap, so they get a truck and a trailer only to turn around and lift the tow rig...

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.....

I'm trying to find a seal surface repair sleeve (Speedi-Sleeve or Redi-Sleeve) for the CTD. This ain't gonna be pleasant, there's a fair chance that I may have to leave the new seal sit a little proud in the hub so that it'll ride on an undamaged part of the spindle.

it's not enough of a performance difference to warrant the cost most likely. Unless you're replacing drums and such anyway because they're shot.
The problems with drums is heat, and the fact that they hold it in. as long as you don't drive like a tard you won't overheat them.

Sam, I'll give u $1050 for it. :D

now that's a standup nice guy right there.

Beezil had the 4.7 in his.

Hey mac look what popped up on CL a little too late...

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/pts/2671642525.html

The motor has finally arrived...got in today at 2pm. Yes it was shipped last thursday from south of Indy and arrived in Garrett, just north of Fort Wayne on Wednesday, that's less than 200 miles. In that same amount of time I drove to New York and back that's over 1300 miles.

I towed with a 99 Dodge Dakota for a while. Had the 318 v8. It did ok, I had w/d hitch, the power was there, but the trailer pushed the truck around. In the end I wish I would've just kept it, and just dealt with the trailer pushing the truck around, instead of trading for my f150 and losing my ass on the trade in.

mac 'too many tow rigs' gyvr

There's a guy in Houston that really wants to buy my 2 place. Problem is we are 1000 miles apart. Its a three day trip for him to come get it and take it home. Its 20 hours round trip for each of us if we meet in Memphis.

Anyone got any grand ideas on how to make this happen?
