Maybe moving to IL coming from SC, where there is no inspections. If some one could tell me what the check and if there are any laws that i need to know about.

The only inspections in the state are for emmisions(sp) & that is around the Chicago area & maybe down around St. Louis. I'm pretty sure an 89 doesn't even have to do that. JIM.
Crook county has emissions test, once ya get out of there i don't think you have to, i lived in kannkakee county for a while and didnt have to test at all but cook you got to test damn near every year, im not sure about further down the state though
96 and up they just plug in the CP and check for codes, but i see you got an 89 so they will do the full out testing
It is an emission test. When your plates are up for new stickers you need to get it tested to be able to get your new sticker. From what i understand ( i have a 2000 so they just plug it in) if you do not have a check engine light on or O2 sensors unplugged you should be fine. It is not an inspection like they have in NY where they cjeck brakes and all sorts of things. From the amount of piece of crap cars i see running around it can not be to hard to pass. Just my two cents but i have never had a problem with it even with a very beat YJ i used to drive. But the question does stand WHY WOULD YOU MOVE HERE? I did see the reason above and understand but boy there are jobs losts of places. I would do anything to move back to Inidana. Ok maybe not anything. ANyway if you do move up here WELCOME
with a pre 96 you no longer will b tested in the state of IL. the gov decided it cost to much to man the rollers so they eliminated them last year or so. if its 96 or newer with the ODBII computer then you will be tested yearly with a simplw computer scan to check any emission control parts, if your check engine light is on you pretty much fail
all 96+ cars will need to go to the station where they plug in the scanner to see if there's any trouble codes. also checko to see if the check engine light will come on (key on engine off). thats all
I only had to take my Blazer in for the inspection once in the last 4 years in the chicago sububs. you dont even need to bother about the emission inspeciton in the IL anywhere other than the chicago area
