What about a club challenge? I know Rock Zombies, Sonora Posse, and Pirates do it... They help clean up trash as well... Why dont we do something like that but all donations go to save our trails? It could be a great fundraiser... IDK just an idea?
I like...Sorta like a shoot out...Pick a place where a comp could be set up easily and fastest club overall gets a cookie or something. Entry fee per rig set at like $25...Overall club prize to the club that collects the most Lbs of trash...half a cookie...Box on the Rubicon would be a good place.
Years ago I competed in an event called a TSD Rally (time-speed-distance). They gave you a map w/ precise directions and an average mph, etc. The challenge was to not try and race ahead or get lost. The finisher closest to the set time (over or under) won. The event covered every kind of terrain including rock crawling to pavement. It was a lot of fun. Especially when we saw the guys who were supposed to have left 30 minutes behind us pass us! They kind of didn't quite get the concept!
We could explore this type of event except w/ a modern spin using GPS?
a subtle and simple idea would be to place donation jars in every parts store etc we can find. "Keep Our trails open" jar. Alot of people up where I live wheel. Most would throw change or cash in. I toss money in all kinds of donation jars as often as I can. I would and will support this cause.
The problem I see with an open to the public wrenching event is liability. Will we be held liable if the oil drain plug falls off their car 100 miles down the road? Or for anything that we do, for that matter?
Waivers?
Otherwise, I think its a great idea.
i brought up the idea of a 'club' to a local forum. the club would be centered around trail trash removal/ cleanup....
It is easier to join an existing group and if they are active in simular efforts it could breath more life into a collective effort.
If no one is doing anything and you can't seem to motivate them I would start something up on my own too, but I find this hard to believe.
Just remember the people in the local clubs are your best bet to motivate in your efforts, and a lot of clubs are already active in trail clean up and restoration. They also have established relationships with the Forest Service and other agentcys to work hand in hand.
I agree in joining something local....I personaly do alot of Clean Ups with the Pirates and the Rock Zombies...trail patrol volunteering, poop pick up runs, etc...we do it all.....you're more then welcome to join our clean ups.
