Icelandic XJ on 38" tires

Nice rig. That thing is a beast. The pic with the drum on the front reminded me of...

Yeah thanx for sharing I really like photo #6 on you 1st post that is so cool and about axle people say no way when I say Ive been driving on my lock 35 with 32 7 years and never broke anything in the rearend so Keep it going .

This foto is taken this spring 2011 on the top of Glacier "Eyjafjallajökull". The volcano that erupted roughly a year ago and affected flight over Europe and the North Atlantic.

Where, in the world, did those fender flares come from? Running in the snow is a different world from what we do here and I expect the D30 works a charm.

BTW, I had a very good 90 day TDY back in the early 70's at Keflavik. I was with the Super Constellations, EC-121 AEW&C aircraft.

The fender flares are made here in Iceland, the company's name is "Gunnar Ingvi - Bílasmiðja" the website: http://www.brettakantar.is/

And these trucks are all street legal! 38" is very common on the streets here and we have up to 54" trucks driving on the roads.

Many of you claim that my axles are way too weak and I should upgrade to much stronger ones. The reasons why I don't have bigger ones are #1 Too much extra weight and #2 The extra cost.

The biggest reason why I like the XJ so much for driveing in snow is it's lightweight. When I modified it I removed these parts to get rid of unneccesary weight:
-Front and rear stabilizer bars (also to make the suspension better for the snow)
-Rear seat
-The power windows from the rear doors, the glass is just stuck closed.
-Spare tire and the bracket for it
-The wiper system from the tailgate
-Some rubber mats and isulation mats

Dry weight is only 1.700 kg, equals 3.700 lbs.

For what you do, that is pushing the 30, especially if you don't have chromo shafts. For the wheeling here in the states a 30 won't hold up to 38's. I see nothing wrong with the 9" axle though. Those are plenty strong. If it breaks it breaks but i'd hate to be out on a glacier and have to try and get home in 2wd! I love the low lift big tires setup though. Please keep us updated with pics! :D

Freyrt I love the pics i want to visit Iceland a lot!

LoL at the rest about the axle carnage. Do you guys really think these guys don't know what they are doing? He said he's only lost 1 diff in 3 XJ's of wheeling with 38"s in the snow. It's completely different type of wheeling than here in the states.

Would love to see any more pics of the build(like the cutting needed), and you said you were using ZJ springs? but are you running any lift besides that?

I have never broken anything in the D30, the previous owner did.

The ZJ springs only gave arround 2 cm lift. The seat for the spring on the front axle is lifted arround 8 cm and at last i got extra 2 cm lift on top of the spring.

Love those rigs! Crossing my fingers that my sister and her fiance decide to get married in Iceland to give us all the excuse to go there and plus get free stay with his family

Nice Jeep. It looks a little too cold for my likin there. The heater would be working in full force for me. Looks very fun though.
