The XJ as I know it died today, a short and some unforeseeable electrical circumstances involving dash components caused some expensive problems and I need reliable transportation in a bad way to get back to school tomorrow. I bought a Land Rover LR2. I drove the Grand Cherokee Overland but for $42,000 and an angry sales manager, its a terrible ride and I can't stand to, or afford to, be bent over and f'ed just to get the ride height adjustment feature. The sticker price was non-negotible. The XJ will be retired to the beach house and will await the day when I can afford to make it a project vehicle. Its a sad day, but I can't wait to get my A/C, Heat...working power windows...working stereo...retain my fillings on bumpy roads...etc...etc. At least I didn't trade in the XJ for a Wrangler....

Pics to follow when I take delivery later today.

At a minimum I will get 2x gas milage and save nearly half on insurance because of the safety features...what a world...

You buy a car in one day? Not much time to think it over huh?

We will see how much money you save on gas when it is broken down every day :)

The only safe way to buy a land rover is under warranty, they will run flawlessly till the day after the warranty runs out then you really pay.
Good luck with it though.

The thread title is appropriate.

I went to the dark side...

does lucas still make electrics for those?

X2. I give him six months before he realizes what a bad mistake that was...

Ha ha ha....

I've been thinking about it for a while and the Jeep is in a constant state of "broken down." I couldn't imagine anything being any worse. It was literally $400/month for the stuff I couldn't fix myself, and I have, unfortunately, no facilities at my apartment complex to do any real work.

I still would have gone with the Grand. If you are willing to travel a bit, you can always find a sales manager to work with.

I wanted it, I really did, but a vehicle priced as a luxury car that drives no better than my lifted XJ is insane. The Overland (the only model available with the ride height adjustment - I sorta felt like I was getting shafted by Jeep here) was out of my price range, I would have had to finance it and the lowest model that was available with selectable 4x4 (the Laredo X) was MORE expensive than the price I negotiated for the LR2. On top of that, the new GC's IFR/IRS is nothing for the serious wheeling crowd to write home about, capable perhaps, but I would rather save the money, retain the XJ and build it up to where it needs to be over the next few years to fulfill my more serious wheeling needs (where the LR2 can handle my daily needs and light wheeling without worries). In some ways the GC is an off-road vehicle pretending to be a luxury car and a luxury car masquerading as an off-road vehicle....after driving it on a paved road, I can tell you it fails miserably as a luxury car despite the price and copious application of chrome. On top of that, the visibility was poor in the GC, half of my field of view was me staring back at me in the rear view mirror.

I couldn't agree more on your assessment of the modern Grands. I just don't like em.

Do your headlights have the standard "dim, flicker, off" settings? Intermittent wipers?

Sounds like the beach house is a great place to work on the jeep to me, but then again I swap engines in parking lots in rainstorms, so I might be a little biased. I hate condo/apartment complexes with draconian anti-vehicle-repair rules.

Most of those electrical problems you listed can be fixed with a DMM, an FSM ($50 on ebay for a legit hardcopy), and a couple hours of troubleshooting. My non working hvac blower turned out to be a melted relay in the dash behind the glove compartment.

The headlight switch didn't just fail, but the connector actually caught fire. I had to pull over and let it cool before continuing my trip (I got smoke in the cabin). The dealers of course don't have the part, but if they did it would cost $2,600. NAPA doesn't make it anymore and I couldn't find a yard that would let me cut one out (our pick and pulls here just suck in a bad bad bad way). I had to push the job to a new mechanic who swore to me he had some pull at the yards and would get me the piece. I walked in the door and told him I melted the plug to the switch and that I wanted both replaced. The install was no problem but it took some cash to grease the wheels at the yard and a couple hours of begging. I had no climate controls for a while (though I rigged the heat back this week). I have 3 of 4 blower settings (expensive part). I have no A/C (condenser and a new box plus a full dash disassembly). I need new shafts and a gear job, at least, up front. I need 4 new tires and a new set of wheels (5 if I go with BFG A/Ts instead of MTs which I will probably do). I need to build myself a D44. I have no skid plates yet, trailer hitch or a rear bumper that works for me (tire/gear carrier). In addition to that I have one pop and one squeal to diagnose and fix. I had to seal off the sunroof and the motor is nearly dead. The sound system is shot (I have 2 working speakers due to harness issues not dead speakers). The passenger window works only intermittently. The interior plastic is about 60% shot, I have an aftermarket carpet that doesn't fit right, the front seats need to be replaced, I rigged the D/S frame rail but it isn't actually safe. If I keep driving it it needs a full fluid change. The body damage is also an issue, I haven't had front fender flares for years but I have yet to cut them either. I have some places starting to rust and other dents from tools and other things that will be difficult to repair. The roof itself is dented (~$1,000). I would also like to get it painted. The vehicle has always had major heat issues and the only real solution is a ground up exhaust system from headers to tail-pipe (in addition to an aux. fan timer). New injectors wouldn't be a bad idea ($$$) and I have a new spark plug rail that needs to be installed (not a big deal). Thats more or less the shopping list for making it perfect again.

All doable things but it takes time and money that I can't drop all at once. Its not a DD anymore, and in the state it's in, it isn't reliable and won't be until I have a few weeks to really strip it down and start rebuilding. A great project and by no means a lost cause, but it just cant be my DD anymore.

Good lord, I'd start with another XJ and just move your good parts over to the new one.

5 dollars says you went to smithtown jeep bc they suck.

also, youre insane. where on the island are you i'll come pick up that truck, fix it for cheap, then sell it to any of the high schoolers 'round here w too much of daddy's cash. also, way to post in the NAC for help, i have a buddy (whos also on this forum) who works at a yard out east.

I think you'll like the Land Rover. Build quality used to be a major issue with these cars but the current offerings are much better. The LR2 (or Freelander as its called here) is supposed to be a good car with very good road manners. Good luck!

Enjoy your overpriced Ford Escape :D

It hasn't been a "Freelander" for years. The Freelander was a godawful abortion worldwide and is just as much an LR2 as the Patriot is an XJ. Last time I checked, the Ford Escape had selectable 4 wheel drive...but that was many years ago when I rented one. So far the LR2 is holding up well in some light snow and highway driving. It handles like a luxury vehicle, came standard with more amenities than the Jeep for less money, gets better gas milage. I would have been happy with the heated seats and xenon projector headlamps. Better than that, it actually stops when I need it to and drives when I need it to without spinning the tires at the slightest hint of moisture...anyway, time to start stocking up on parts.

East Hills. The guy on the floor was great, but the manager (who blew a sale with my mother on her last car ~2 years ago...over about $500 IIRC) was a pain in the ass. He says, "What do I have to do to stop you from going to see the Land Rover?" They were looking for a GC that had everything I wanted, but the price was still just about sticker. I told him I wasn't comfortable with the price, I didn't like being forced to buy the top model for one feature and that I was uncomfortable paying for a pile of useless junk (air conditioned seats...they blow cold air up your butt, rear heated seats, chrome out the ass, navigation and entertainment systems that I didn't want, a heated steering wheel for god sakes). He insisted that I go drive one, I did, it felt like a Jeep and had NO visibility. I said, "Sorry, but the only responsible thing to do is to look at other vehicles." They offered nothing, and I left.

The truck is gettin fixed, hopefully this summer when I get some time...

You kidding me, AC'd seats, no way. I miss the production XJ, SE model, no bells or whistles, nice 5 speed, one computer, no electric windows or door locks. I don't want all the extra BS that has to be fixed.
