I started

I use fine threaded allen head bolts for center pins too. Some spring perch holes are a little too small in diameter for the head, but I just "roll grind" the head down until it fits. They work fine ...

Les

PS: It's a cheap way to carry some "spares" too.

I think it's time for a *I'm finished* thread.
You'll get one of those soon. As soon as I figure out how to get this caliper guide pin out. THen the real work can start.

Ok. After 14 hours of work the truck is lifted, but Mark's craziness with the front brakes set me back today.
here's the run down.
One broken upper rear shock mount stud. Replaced with a bolt through the frame.
Both LCA's had to be cut from the frame with a sawzall, it really sucks when melted rubber and metal drops all over your face.
Ended up reusing the 97 Bearings, my bearings wouldn't fit. The bearing was too long into the knuckle and hit the tone ring on the shaft.
Got new 97 rotors and calipers, need the old style calipers, found this out after 3 trips to the parts store for the right pads...
Things that need doing:
All rear brake hardware, right now it's just empty drums.
Front calipers.
Bleed brakes.
Hook up Trackbar.
Do ghetto Go.Jeep alignment.
Fill diffs with oil.
Take it for a test drive.
I took pictures, need to find te memory card reader.
the Mj certainly sits taller now, rocker panel is about mid-thigh for me, gonna have to jump to get in.

Don't forget the rear shocks to the spring plates and the front driveshaft. All those LCA and UCA bolts need torqued to spec and the front shocks need installed.

Hook up that trackbar to the original hole and sometime this week I'll come over and help you drill a new hole.

I'm damn sore this morning, next time you have to buy a lift first.

I hadn't forgot. Well I had not looking at the truck.
Waiting on Jarrod so I can go get the right calipers.
Pictures.
Old and busted axles.

I think I need 32's/33's now :)

Hey, your driveshaft hardware is on the old dana 35. Dad handed me the front hardware when we reinstalled the rear. Couldn't call because nobody has your number.

nope, I found it.
Under some cardboard.
But ten I f-ed up the front u-joint. Got it screwed in, then went to go to the other side to screw the other strap on. U-joint slipped out of it's cap and all the little pins went away.
I've got new u-joints, I'm off to rent the u-joint tool.
I also need to get the track bar back on, it looks like I'm going to have to undo the frame side. No way I can get it back underneath the axle. It's over on top of the spring perch practically.
Brakes are finished, all shocks installed. I gotta get the front DS finished and the trackbar done and it's ready.

Well it moved under it's own power today.
Still need to attach the trackbar.
Front DS is pulled, one of the c-clips broke in half and it's rusted into the groove in he yoke. I'll deal with it later.
I'm eating lunch, then going to do the trackbar.
Brakes work.
Rechecked the locker, it's locking and unlocking properly.
Quick pic.

In due time. I've got to get all the axles out of the way first!
Anyone need a d35 housing and tubes? I've got 2. What about a D30?

Yeah, I think I'm gonna just chop it all up and tube it.

:jester:

well, I got the trackbar connected and the axle centered.
Mark had already drilled another hole in the trackbar for about 3" of lift. Thanks mark :)
It's still not ready to roll, I was torqueing down an UCA bolt and it snapped off. Need to wait for the wife to come home so I can go get a grade 8 replacement, and I need to recheck what values I was using. 130 is too much aparently

I bet you don't say that to your wife ... without a few bumps and bruises!

well, I got it out on the street. Driving with a Detroit is scertainly different.
Everything seems to be good except my left rear brake. I've got some smoke(!) coming from the drum. There was also some liquid coming from the adjuster holes. It didn't smell like gear oil, I'll be angry if one of those new wheel cylinders is defect out of the box. I hope that the axle shaft seal wasn't damaged during installation. As soon as the brakes cool I'm gonna go see what's up.

Well, I'm an impatient bastard, so I just burnt my hands taking off the drum.

Good news is that it isn't the axle seal.
Bad news is that I f-ed up installing my brakes. The forward side of the wheelcylinder was not on it's shoe properly, after a few pushes of the pedal the piston pushed out of it's bore and spewed brake fluid all inside the drum.

Explains the weird pedal feel I got after a few stops. They worked fine in the driveway, must have taken the adjuster moving for it to slide of it's show.
I'm off to do brakes/bleeding again :(

another update.
Brakes work fine.
Detroit seems to be fucked.
Very unhappy.
GOing back out to tear into the rearend. It works fine when there is power going to the wheels. Push in the clutch or engine brake and it sounds real bad, like gears grinding.
unhappiness is a borked detroit.
Hopefully the R&P is Ok, I may just swap in the factory carrier, I still have the shims and such all marked for it.

OK, so here's the lowdown. The freaking pinion nut came loose.
It was fine under drive power because the ring pulled the pinion into it, under coasted it was forcing it out and then it was nasty gear chatter.
I torqued the pinion nut down until it met the crush sleeve, then gave it a little nudge just to tighten it. I also locktighted the hell out of it. Seems to be OK. I'l be ordering a new bearing, and I imagine that a full teardown is in order before we drive it to NC in July.
Sucks.
I'll be like a N00B now.
DON'T BUY PARTS FROM MARK< THEY"RE ALL CRAPPY AND I GOT RIPPED OFF!

Just kidding Mark, I should have checked it before the axle went in, but I just never thought about it since we hadn't touched it.
