I Saved The Life Of Another AW4 Today

So I got a recall letter in the mail. You've all heard of it. The E22 Reprogramming. I searched around here to see if it was ok and wouldn't cause any effects we would consider set-backs.

Went to the dealer, decided to let 'em do a transmission fluid and filter change. I have read then re-read just about every forum in this site. So to beat the system I had em leave a note in the service slip. "Dexron III fluid only - Not ATF +4". Come back the next day and what happens... The service guy left me a special note on the service slip saying he put ATF +4 into "Stacey Kiebler" and that he left me the TSP on the front seat to prove he was correct. He will be getting a call from me tomarrow. I left the ol' girl there. I will not drive it off the lot until it is corrected.

So I need some help guys. I need some proof, evidence, that I am correct. I have no OM.

If it's the TSP I think it is, he didn't read it all the way through. It lists all the Chrysler trannies that require ATF4+. Then at the bottom it says do not use ATF4+ unless specified above.

Tell him to look at the goddamn drain plug! Yucca-man's picture on page 1 of this forum!
Yup - I'd call him on the carpet in front of the service manager and ask him to explain that one.

Just what DOES this marking on the drain plug mean??

Freakin' wrench monkeys...probably think there's a 710 cap on top of the engine, too.

Strange drain plug.
 Stock plug on a '96 AW-4...complete with gouges from some wrench monkey using the wrong wrench.

Small hi-jack: The local Autism Zone near me has FINALLY learned that when I walk in, and want parts, "Don't ask me what's for, ask me what it came off of". The sad thing is, the only one of them that actually can and does work on his own stuff, is leaving on the 19. Damn. No more 20% off. At least he is going to the ( wait for it....) Jeep dealer, as the main parts guy.

What year is your Jeep? I own a RENIX and mine takes Dex-2 or 3. But I think newer XJ's may take ATF+4.

oh boy, did you read the whole thread?

Yes but I must have missed something. I am with you all on the ATF/ DEX issue and have gotten into it several times with the parts guys. I dont own a newer jeep so I have no idea if they use DEX or ATF. I guess I should have phrased my statement like this,

" After Chrysler bought out Jeep did they change trany's or fluid requirements?"

Like I stated several post's back I had issue's with dealerships and parts stores. Just not sure about after the buy-out.

its still an aisin(sp) warner tranny(aw4). not a chrysler tranny.

wow it must suck to be living where you guys are, at the store i go to i know all the sale guys/gal by name cuz we all grew up together and the owners are cool. I can go into the shop and say whatever i need for my jeep and they hand it over. They might ask why on some stuff but with a simple 'guys run all the time on the forums' they'll just say cool. Its like having some of you guys behind the counter.

WOW, I really thought in the US it was possible to trust what shops tell you, but now I see it's just the same crap everywhere.

Here in Mexico many stores want the part to be replaced to search for it. This is often annoying if you want to replace, let's say the distributor rotor (or something that's more difficult to take out) for a manteinance and your XJ is the only car available. I personally buy alot at Autozone because of the catalog, and I have never gotten wrong parts.

I'm lucky to have a manual tranny in my XJ... That's possibly a good reason why many people have trouble with auto XJs around here. :D

hold on, with the manual tranny, the debate now becomes gl3 vs gl5.

gl3 in the manual tranny.

We have plent of XJs running down here and always the same stupid thing every time I need to flush the tranny and T-case....any place I go guys try to push you for ATF4+ or something different than Dex-III....last time the guy suggested a ATF4 with "special" friccion aditive and would cost 10 times more than D-III but better efficience....I said forget it (not with those words otherwise I'd be moderated here...lol). I prefer to always use D-III even if I have to flush more often.
Here 95% of cars have manual tranny and people are use to go for 85W140 or even mono 90. The fanny once a guy offered me to use one of those mineral oil in the T-case and ATF3 in the tranny....I left the place imagining how many cars here are runninng this way due those brainless people.

On the AW4, if the wrong transmission fluid (ATF+4 or whatever) was put in it, can one simply drain the transmission and replace with DIII (obviously a few times to get all the fluid out), or are they incompatible? I don't know the history of my XJ, and while it's shifting wonderfully now, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Oh man, The ol' girl is still at the dealership. I refuse to drive her off the lot until this matter is worked out. I will not pay for the work, nor will I turn the key and allow that ATF to cycle through. I told them I know where it is parked and I suggest it stay right there until we can get the matter worked out.

I was stuck at work so the prick faxed me the TSP stating the "Recommended fluid for the AW-4 is ATF+4."" He said They cannot put the wrong fluid in knowingly and that there is nothing else they can do.
Even though that's what it left the factory with!

I will be visiting tomarrow. And speaking with the technician, the supervisor and their boss. It will be resolved. And that crap is coming out.
