yeah yeah, i knew it would happen eventually, i got pulled over for my tires sticking out. but to my surprise he gave me 20 days to get some flares. however he said my tires could stick out 3 inches past the body line, so does that mean i have to cover the hole tire or can i cover just enough so that no more then three inches sticks out? also my bumpers cant be higher then 20 inches he said. so i have to get it registered as a truck......

Last I remember from when I was doing inspections, Bumpers can not be any higher than 28" from the bottom of the bumper to the ground. The tires can not stick out past the body. I would get some TJ flares from the yards if they can be found. I know my bumpers are 27" from the ground to the bottom of the bumper.

I've always read 30" :dunno:
I know the 3" flare thing means you're not allowed to have more than a 3" flare, and it has to completely cover the tire. So, "technically" bushcrackers are illegal.

in PA, technically yes, afaik. i also believe you are correct about the 30" bumper height.

Yeah, it's a PA thing for sure. That's one thing (the only thing) I like about living in the city, cops have more important things to do.

In my experience it's the "small town" police that give everyone a hard time.

yep, i got pulled over last year in the philly burbs.

I live in the philly surburbs and have yet to get bothered by the police. My bumpers are sitting roughly at 28"-29" high.

he pulled me over for my tires sticking out too far

I think this PA cop thing strictly depends on how 'wild' your rig looks. The whole bumper height was only brought up to me one time by an inspection shop. I dont go there anymore. Other than that I've never had any problems with mine. I've got rear TJ flares front and back, tires still stick out, but I never get hassled or even a double take.

To the OP heres my junk just for a flare idea pic.

Mines the black one, hammered in red

Backroads has the stock tj rear flares I believe.

I have them on mine also

I think you'll be fine with the regular ones. My tires stuck out pretty far with no flares, and the stock tj flares cover them pretty well. The 7" ones might look kinda silly in my opinion.

Yea mine are just stock TJ flares. Using rear flares both front and back. The wider ones look goofy enough on a stupid TJ, let alone on a cherokee!

^ what are those? bushwacker up front TJ flare in back?!

I still have stock flares and I have never had a problem.
I also have read 20" to the bottom of the lowest point of the frame connection of the bumper.
So the lowest point of the bumper... unless you have a hitch you can count that as a frame connection.
not a great picture, but this is my junk..
