its officially thanksgiving break from school. ive got my bow dialed in (as usual, hasnt changed in years), i can confidently hit 30 yards, can reach to 40 if need be. i also pulled out my reminton 870 (20ga.) shotgun and got it ready. my father offered me his 1187, 12ga. semi auto, but i want to use my 20ga. ill be bow hunting in the evenings. in the morning, im bundling up and taking my shotgun. lol. screw being cold, but i also dont like shooting my bow when ive got tons of layers on either. luckily, it looks like rising temps this week too. i need to get it sighted in for slugs tomorrow though. right now im just shooting buck shot with a full choke. ill probably sight in my fathers 35 tomorrow too, that way i can confidently reach out to 100yds if the hunt calls for it.

if i dont get a deer this week (ive never shot anything with my shotty or bow, or anything in general other than targets) im giving up.

trying like heck to squeeze a couple more good duck hunts out of the lackluster water conditions here in central iowa. most of the water is frozen, so i had to make my way to a different part of the state where 40k ducks have been keeping about 10 acres of water open. weren't quite in the right spot, but worked 3 flocks in. the last one was well over 1000 ducks. pretty incredible...i guess its the waterfowlers equivalent of having a 190+ buck walk under your tree stand. something you don't see very often. certainly made the 2 + hour drive worth it...here were todays results

Ive been wanting to go duck hunting. Never been but I have about 6 dozen of dads decoys that he used in the 70s.

I'll bet its gonna be damn tasty though. My first deer was a button buck. I was 11 and the damn thing looked big being the first time I had seen a deer up close. We got a paper bag full of meat off of it. Man, that's sad. Haha!

We got 16lbs. of meat from Jarrett's.

JIM.

thats... 48 1/3lb burgers. haha. (PS - is that 870 a 20ga. or 12ga? ive got the 870 express in the 20ga flavor. quality little gun.)

the first one is the hardest... for some. ive seen people take their girlfriend out one time and she shoots a 8 point her first/only time out. son of a... my roomate is all distressed because she's spent so much money this year to get into the sport and hasnt seen anything. (IMO, the smell of dog, cat, cigs, and hair spray on her coat might have something to do with it, she thinks her camo is a fashion statement. but thats another thread...) ive been "hunting" for years, seen deer, never seen anything with antlers. and this was the first shot ive taken. i like to think i put my dues in. enough talk, here is bambi:

1/4ing away shot. about 20 yards. that wound on the top is the entry, was a clean pass through. i wanted to hit a little back, just a hair too far though. got a little gut, but not enough to make cleaning it nasty. ive seen that before, no thank you, lol. exit wound spit his lung out the other side.

and here ive been thinking all season about going to a bigger broad head. the only reason ive stuck with my little 85 grain thunderheads for the last 5 years is that i tuned them to the arrows i have when i set the inserts myself. that, and the fact that i had never shot anything... :anon: entry wound was enough to stick 4 fingers through. ive had girlfriends who could take less.

nothing goes to waste obviously, and the puppy dogs will be getting some nice fresh bones for christmas.

at least the spots are gone. :D

congrats.

central Michigan is a tough area to find big deer. I went 20 years of sitting in the woods and the biggest Central MI deer I've brought home was an 8. funny how they always look bigger when they're alive.

congrats again....now enough with the deer talk...lets get to business about this cig puffin' hair spary using, roommate chick of yours...post up some pics of that!
