How quickly plans can be ruined...

Well, I just got a call from my wife, who after working at Mervyn's for 22 years is going to be unemployed. :( They just found out that the store is filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy. I'm really bummed right now. We literally live paycheck to paycheck as we are trying to get our kids through college, and even in the great Bay Area there are not a lot of job opportunities that pay as well as she was doing there, not to mention it was our source of Med/Dental benefits at a lower cost than my company offers. So the bottom line is all Jeep expenditures are going to be on hold indefinitely. Totally bummed... throw me some good karma guys, I can really use it right now.

I heard about that on the news this morning. Times are tough right now. I think there are more than a few of us who are living paycheck to paycheck right now. Good luck to you and your family,

Thank's Bryan...I will still contribute to the Toy's for Tot's run as there are many people out there who are still way less fortunate than we are and the kids are usually the ones who suffer most. I may not be able to go the actual run though, we shall see.

More and more Folks are losing they're jobs with todays economy.
Sorry to hear, I lost my job a month ago.. Im waiting till next thursday to even afford 3 qts of Tranny fluid! haha

Sorry to hear about that. Get your kids to start taking on some of their own college fund so the jeep can have some more fun! My parents supported me in community college (slightly), but after that it was all me (wish it was the other way around really...).

Best of luck though.

I'm sorry to hear that Ed. Just when you were making huge progress on the jeep too. It seems this economic situation has put a lot of good folks in hard places. "Soft Landing" my ass. I knew it was going to be bad then but to see and hear of good people now being thrown on hard times because of others foolish actions just makes me mad.

Best wishes to you and your family. Financial Aid would be a great thing to look into now, got me through college with modest debt.

Sorry to hear, Ed.
Everyday I work at my dead-end crappy job I'm stressed about where my next paycheck will come from. I'll never get fired but being laid off because the lack of jobs is a definate worry of mine.
Unemployment will not pay the bills...

I heard this on the news too. If you want the money back from the parts I sold you till you can build, I have no prob with swaping cash for the parts back. Or I know I asked you not to sell them for a profit, but if you need/want to sell them, it is totaly cool by me.

I wish your wife well on the job hunt, and I will think good thoughts for you and yours.

Also heard on the news Gilead Sciences in Foster City will be hiring over 500 people. Gilead is a pharmacuetical rsearch company that made a very popular (profitable) HIV/AIDS drug. There is a start-up /spin off of google that will be hiring and it's probably on hold but that car company in San Jose was to "create" over 5K jobs in the bay area.

There are several retail stores out there. I am sure your wife will be able to get back into something fairly quickly. It may not be for the same money but during bad times companys look better workers. Unless they are closing their doors, they still need employees! Keep a positive look on things.

Thank you to all who have PM'd me and posted here. I'm an eternally optimistic person and after talking with her last night I/we are feeling much better about the situation. Fortunately they are not closing the doors immediately so there is no need to panic about finances right away. She will have time to look for a good fit in her next job and not just jump at anything that comes along. I even got my employer to consider waiving the rule of no spouses being employed at the same time, and there are some job openings in our alarm monitoring dept. on graveyard shift, and we are in an industry that doesn't really get affected by the ups and downs in the economy. One drag for her is she may lose her unpaid vacation hours (130) unless the Judge makes them honor them. Again thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts!

I'm in the same boat except I lost my job. I feel your pain. Been putting off brakes for my XJ since september due to finances. Law enforcement is always hiring out in the bay. This is my finaly option, I will be starting the CHP academy in Jan. Good luck to you and the family, it will all work itself out.

Ps..not sure if your on Pirate but they have a local job board, might want to check that out.

I heard about a week ago that Forever21 is courting Mervys in an buyout save-your-ass attempt. Maybe three some hope there. Either way, good luck bro.

I am sorry to hear about this, after 22 years anyone would believe that their future was secure. I work for Non-profits to the tune of 75-90 hours a week. Both of them are struggling financially and the pay is terrible. In this day and age I guess we need to be thankful when we go to work simply because we have a job! I wish you and your wife well in her job search.

I worked at one company for 16 years. Promotions and/or raises every year. A few weeks prior to my review, they offered me a package, or I could stay on in a "yet to be determined" position. lol yeah right. I was out of work for 11 months.

The whole time I told my wife thinks could be and will be much worse. Right now we are just worried about money, eventually we will be worried about our health.

Still sucked but it put it into perspective.

Actually I guess that is kind of depressing. lol

Last night I was reading Rants and Raves on the bay area craigslist and there were a few opinions (and no sympathy) about the Redwood City Mervyns closing down. Made for some interesting and enlightening reading about why shopper had taken their business elsewhere.

Im sorry to hear that mate. I recently applied at mervyns they still have hiring ads posted. even though its closing. I am moving up to Seattle purely because there is no jobs here. I got out of the Army 5 months ago and have had 2 interviews since applying to 30+ jobs.
though i have injuries preventing me from doing most jobs. anyway Good luck man its a shame the Government will bail out banks but they wont bail out a chain that has 149 stores and 3000 jobs in the bay area alone

Hang in there. I was laid off in March the day before my birthday. As my wife cried the next day at work someone over heard her talking to a co-worker that I was looking for work. The other person's husband just happened to be looking for someone. Now I work 5 min from home instead of an hour and a half and love what I'm doing. It was a crazy stressful couple of weeks but it all worked out. I did take a huge pay cut since I changed careers but it was worth it. I hope everything works out for you as well. Take this opportunity to do what you've always wanted to do!
