How Many in a local 4x4 club other than NAXJA

The reason that I ask is that a few of us from the Lafayette Area want to start a club. You know the monthly meetings, community service stuff, and all that stuff. The problem is how do you get something like that off the ground. We have 6 members right now and only three of us have trucks. The other members have the interest but no means to buy a truck. We really need to organize better and find a few more people to get this thing really rolling. Two of the founding members came from one of the largest clubs in the state of indiana and would like to run it alittle like they did. Help please.

Kind of a missleading title, thought it was a poll... ;)

Good luck on the new club! Indiana has a number of really nice places to wheel, so you should have a large base of "4WD types" to garner members and support !

There are lots of folks who "Jeep" but do not belong to a club. Too bad really as clubs encourage use of the "TreadLightly" concept and many contribute to their State Association to fight the effects of Militant Green :D

A few of us Madison, WI "web wheelers" started this one for kicks a while back: http://www.mcjag.org Yah, I'm a bit behind on the house keeping ;)

Scott,
I belong to Fat Boys Jeepers/IFWDA. We are hosting IFWDA's Annual Convention February 23rd-25th in New Castle. You and your club is welcome to attend and see what we are about. We will be having activities throughout the whole weekend and wrap it up on Sunday with our quarterly meeting. Saturday will be your choice of trail rides at Haspin Acres or a road rally. Let me know if you are interested in coming.

We have decided on a name and I've made a calendar of events. But we feel we need to get a few more people who are alittle more gun ho than some of our members before we join ifwda. We do want to help the cause and do our part to keep our hobby alive for our kids to enjoy with their kids. We would like to do things like trail clean up and enviromental stuff but we just don't know where to start. We don't have the public land that the west has. We do want to get the message out that not all 4 wheelers are out to damage everything they drive across. How do you get the word out? And get people intersted?

well - right here you have a huge avenue of people in your area who might show up for an event...

try looking at the public lands or private lands that you wheel, and find out who runs them. schedule a day for trail cleanup or repair and talk with the people running the place - maybe setup a deal where people helping you get 1/2 price admission, have a vendor cook some food for lunch...

Id love to see some of the MWC treasury money go to a tail clean up or repair day...

Also check out the land use forum here and on pirate to see what local areas to you have come under attack or praise recently and talk to the poeple who manage and run these areas of wheeling...

then advertise it a lot - every local 4x4 shop that you can get to put a flyer up in their window, every local club statewide who has meetings... start threads on boards...

I personally do not belong to any wheeling clubs, but have attended probably 10+ trail cleanups / work days all over the country just based on reading the when and where threads on boards...

that is where id start...

oh - and having a webpage that you can direct people to with info is good too...

You don't have to be a student, we have many guys in the club that aren't students. You can meet up with everybody and wheel with us and see how you like it, without paying anything. Members get a ton of discounts from a lot of places though, so that was my incentive to join. There's a wide range of vehicles too.

Member's skills vary from knowing nothing about 4x4's to building their own Dana 70 front axle (He made his knuckles from scratch). Go check out our forums, there's a lot of good stuff on there along with a lot of stupid stuff.

We have done trail clean-ups and community service projects also.

Hopefully someone "in charge" here could add some of the links mentioned above to that page. There's many clubs in Ohio, & only a couple legal places to wheel now.

post a link, a picture, and the name of the club... and ill see they get added...

Watch how you post links...

You must have the permission of the Copywrite owner to post pictures or logos on your site. I noticed many club logos. Did anyone ask them?
I know the owner of the MadXJ logo is picky about who uses his brand.

Also, one really should contact the owner of the website you are linking to for permission to do so. I do not believe it is a legality, but it shows good faith.
Many large link pages will only take them from the site owner. I suspect they do that for a reason.

Scott- Start small and take on more as the membership permits.

If you want to for a club, by all means do it!
You do not have to incorporate, but it helps from a liability standpoint.
If you incorporate, find out whether you want to be just a "not for profit" corporation or go for your 501C status. The 501C status is more paperwork. If you decide to have a club checking account, which is a good accounting thing to have incase the revenuers come looking, you need to apply with the IRS for a EIN (Employer Identification Number) even though you have no employees. This is important: If you pay anybody as an employee you open up another can of paperwork whoopass.

So, start off as a Group and see how you like it. No ppwk, no ties.
If you folks like it, Incorporate, draw up some basic bylaws and start having regular meetings. Do fun things and have fun meetings. Fun meetings=more attendance.
Don't worry about the "give back" or "Supporting a cause" until you can make it enjoyable, or of small burden. Many is the club which took up "Adopt a Road" programs only to dump them on the aniversary date due to lack of interest.

As far as getting the word out about TreadLightly, get some of their pamplets and distribute them. If you want to advertise your club, leave fliers on Jeeps and in autoparts/4wd stores. A website can help, but only if everyone has computers. Not everyone has a computer. In one 4WD Association I belonged to, I estimated by direct poll that 2/3 of the members either did not have a computer, or were illiterate computer owners (the kids had them). Make your website basic and if you need a "Forum" use MSN or Yahoo Groups to keep the cost down.
